AbstractThe classical theory of radiation was able to explain satisfactorily the relationship between the dispersion of refraction and coherent light scattering. However, in the 1920s the old quantum theory encountered difficulties in explaining these phenomena and these were only fully overcome 20 years later.

摘要:
AbstractRaman spectra of benzoic acid, sodium benzoate and complexes of lanthanides with benzoic acid, of general formula Ln(Obz)3(Ln = lanthanum, neodymium, terbium, dysprosium or lutetium; OBz= benzoic acid radical) were recorded. The Raman bands of lanthanide benzoates were interpreted on the basis of the Raman and IR spectra. Analysis of benzene ring vibrations, active in the Raman and IR spectra, and electronic transitions in the UV and visible spectra provided information on the effect of metal coordination on the aromatic system of benzoic acid.

AbstractThe medium‐resolution Raman spectrum of benzoic acid vapour has been recorded. Comparison of the high‐frequency spectrum with the internal spectra of substituted and similar molecules indicates that previous assignments of the spectra should be revised. AbstractThe influence of high electrostatic fields on Raman scattering has been studied. For fields approaching 108V m−1in polymers a contribution to the Raman intensity due to the non‐linearity of the Raman polarizability could be demonstrated. These results are in agreement with theoretical considerations. The band position does not change within the achieved resolution of 0.1 cm−1for fields up to 1.7 × 108V m−1, as also expected from theoretical estimates. With pulsed fields of duration<1 μs, field strengths exceeding the static breakdown strength could be applied. In this case, however, a very complex pre‐breakdown behaviour was observed, influencing the Raman scattering in a manner not yet
