AbstractThe interaction of iodine cyanide and cyanide in aqueous solution has been reinvestigated and it has been confirmed that a complex cyanide ion, the dicyanoiodate(I) ion [I(CN)2]−is formed. This ion has been isolated in the solid state for the first time, as its tetraphenylarsonium, tetraphenylphosphonium and caesium salts. Infrared and Raman spectroscopic studies of these salts are reported. These spectra are fully consistent with a linear centrosymmetric (D∞h) structure for the [I(CN)2]−ion. AbstractThe Raman spectra of oriented single crystals of7LiH2PO3and6LiH2PO3at 293 K and 83 K are reported and compared.6Li/7Li substitution was used to identify the translational modes of the lithium atoms. Bands with a lithium isotopic shift of 3–6% are observed in the 300–500 cm−1region. The spectra of the6LiH2PO3single crystal indicate a coupling between the lithium vibrations and the deformation modes δ(PO3) of the HPO2OH−ion. Assignments are proposed for internal modes of the crystal. Polarized infrared reflection spectra at 293 K and longitudinal Raman spectra at 293 K and 83 K in the 400–2500 cm−1region are reported for7LiH2PO3single crystal. An analysis in terms of Drude oscillators leads to a better understanding of the dielectric properties of the monocrystal and also to the determination of the dispersion parameters of the transverse and longitudinal optical modes. AbstractThe Raman and far‐infrared spectra of a dozen antimony halide complexes of formula SbX6−3, SbX5−2, Sb2X9−3and SbX4−1have been recorded and analyzed for X = Br and I. The stretching frequencies for the bromo complexes range from about 135 to 220 cm−1for external bonds and from about 110 to 130 cm−1for bridging bonds. For the iodo complexes the ranges observed are 138–174 cm−1(external) and 87–127 cm−1(bridging). Approximate force constants were calculated for the anions and these were compared to values previously determined for halobismuthates. In general, the ordering of the force constants was found to be SbBr>SbI˜BiBr>BiI. As was found for the bismuth complexes, the stretching force constants were greatest for bonds in the anions in which the largest number of other b

AbstractRaman spectra of NH4IO4and ND4IO4have been recorded at several temperatures between 83 K and 371 K. As the temperature is increased, several bands due to both internal and external modes of the periodate ion are shifted to lower wavenumbers. AbstractThe products of the surface decomposition of NO2/N2O4on zeolites X and A and γ‐alumina have been investigated using Raman spectroscopy. On the zeolite surfaces results indicate that a self‐ionization surface reaction occurs to generate nitrate (NO3−) and nitrosonium (NO+) ions. The extent of self‐ionization of NO2/N2O4appears to be far greater for the zeolitic absorbed phase than for the liquid phase. The nitrate appears to be held on cation sites while the nitrosonium ion is associated with the zeolitic oxide framework. Two different nitrate species form on zeolite A while only one nitrate species was detected on zeolite X. In the zeolite systems the spectra of adsorbed NO+were resonance enhanced using shorter wavelength exciting lines while the nitrate spectra were conventional (spontaneous) Raman spectra. AbstractRaman spectra of SO2adsorbed on zeolites X, Y and A are reported together with a normal coordinate analysis of the various spectra of the adsorbed molecuar SO2. The data indicate that crystal‐like SO2is adsorbed on cation sites II and III of the zeolitic oxide framework. Internal SO2force constants quantifying adsorbate distortion are developed and compared with the frequency difference parameter,Δ(ν3–ν1). Raman spectral data also indicate the formation of several decomposition products of SO2, generated by surface reactions, which may include S 3−, S2, S4, SxO, SO 32−and SO 42−. AbstractThe infrared and Raman spectra of solid, liquid and gaseous epifluorohydrin have been recorded. For the fluid phases, there are a number of spectral triplets which can be interpreted as arising from acisand two nonequivalentgaucheconformations. The number of bands which disappear as the solid sample is annealed indicates that a single conformation exists in the crystalline state. The temperature dependence of the intensities of Raman lines for the liquid state is consistent with enthalpy differences of approximately 0.6 and 0.4 kcal mol−1between the most stable and each of the less stable conformers. AbstractThe infrared spectra of 1,1‐dimethyl‐1‐silacyclopentane in the vapor and solid phases have been recorded from 4000 to 20 cm−1. The Raman spectra (3500‐0 cm−1) of all phases have been measured and depolarization data have been obtained for both the gaseous and liquid phases. An assignment for the 57 normal modes is presented.
