摘要:
The droughts are analyzed by the third asymptotic distribution of smallest values which contains a shape parameter λ, a location parameter θ and a lower limit, the minimum drought ε. If ε = 0 the two remaining parameters are estimated from the sample mean [xbar] and the standard deviations.If the minimum drought ε is positive it is postulated that the estimateshould be smaller than the smallest observed droughtx1. An estimate for λ is obtained from the quotient ([xbar] −x1)/s. The estimation for θ and ε become linear functions of the mean [xbar] and the smallest droughtx1. Since this theory gives an excellent fit to the observations it can safely be used for forecasting.

摘要:
An analysis of the present balance of the ice mass on the Antarctic continent carried out by several authors, shows a substantial excess of supply over expenditure. However, no consideration was given to the possibility of a decrease in the amount of Antarctic ice by melting at its lower surface and a run-off of water. This paper is intended to fill this gap.

A glacier remains in a steady state only when a strict relation exists between the rate of external mass exchange, the ice velocity and the thickness at every point. The shape of the glacier and its velocity distribution is determined by a system of equations which take into account is determined by a system of equations which take into account the distribution of the external mass exchange, the temperature, the form and the properties of the bed.

Crillon Glacier system (Lat. 58° 37′ N, Long. 137° 23′w) consisting of two long feeding arms and a common T-shaped ending along the Fairweather Fault, with two cliffed termini, has been advancing. La Perouse's sketch map in 1786 suggests that North and South Crillon Glaciers were back far enough to have separate termini in Lituya Bay, so they must have advanced at about 30 m/yr for 150 years. More detailed maps and photos show that North Crillon terminus did advance 28 m/yr into open water positions from 1894 to 1933. Some of this 4.5 km advance may well be just the result of consolidation of two long calving ice cliffs into one deep water front.

A brief survey is made of the variations of the W. Greenland glaciers in post-glacial prehistoric and historic time. It is tentatively concluded that in post-glacial prehistoric time the variations were greater than in historic time, but varied in a uniform way parallel to the present ice margin. In historic time it appears that an advance commenced between 1500 and 1600, and an advance occurred in the 18th century. It is difficult to generalise about the maximum advances, there is a clear tendency for the maxima to occur before 1850 in the South, but in some other localities the maxima did not occur until 1900–1930.

摘要:
In former times the inhabitants of alpine regions looked upon glaciers as an uncanny and dangerous realm which they avoided as far as possible. It was only around the middle of the 18th Century that man became gradually aware of the beauty of the mountains, and approximately at the same time science started to take an interest in glaciers. Most of the questions raised in this field have been solved since. However, even in our times it is not sufficiently well known that glaciers, which are responsible for the characteristics of the regime of alpine rivers, are interesting not only from the point of view of physical geography, but are also of great importance for the economy and technical development of alpine countries.
