In hydrology, branching-type phenomena occur in several instances, for example in ground-water flow (splitting flow channels in a porous medium) and in the formation of a natural river network (combining, i.e., inverse branching, of small rivers to form large rivers). Such phenomena can be treated by the statistics of topological bifurcating arborescences. It is shown how ensembles of arborescences can be generated on a computer and expectation values for observables can be calculated. In this fashion, the laws of dispersion processes in flow through porous media and Horton's law of stream numbers in drainage basins are shown to be the outcome of very simple statistical assumptions.

In southeastern Arizona, almost all summer rainfall results from widely-scattered high-intensity afternoon or evening thunderstorms of limited areal extent. For eleven years of record on the Walnut Gulch Experimental Watershed, Tombstone, Arizona, about 70 percent of the annual rainfall of 11 1/2 inches and over 95 percent of the annual runoff occurred in July, August, and early September. In contrast, about 5 percent of the rainfall occurred in the previous 3 months, and about 25 percent in the remaining 6 1/2 months.

Relations of runoff to altitude may be denned for a hydrologically homogeneous region by using a limited number of streamflow records. Mean runoff from ungaged basins in this same region can then be computed on the basis of this derived relation. When these relations of runoff to altitude are applied to small areas, the runoff may be different from that indicated by the relation, because of local differences in geology, precipitation, vegetation, land slopes, and land use. Two methods are described for adjusting the relations for the effects of these variations; one based on a streamflow measurement at miscellaneous sites which is applicable to perennial streams, the other on measurement of two channel parameters which is applicable to either perennial or ephemeral streams.
