AbstractUnder constant external conditions, chemical reactions may also proceed in a rhythmic manner. The kinetic mechanisms responsible for such oscillations prove to be unexpectedly complicated. It can nevertheless be demonstrated that chemical periodicity is caused by certain kinds of coupling between simultaneous reactions or transport processes. A general survey of the chemistry and phenomenology of the principal chemical oscillations is followed by a discussion of the situations leading to periodic reactions on the basis of the multivariable kinetics of feedback systems. Autocatalysis and autoinhibition play an important role, as also do kinetic instability and spatial propagation.

AbstractThe principal industrial applications of photochemistry have so far been in the fields of free‐radical chlorination, sulfochlorination, sulfoxidation, and nitrosation. In addition, however, photochemical reactions are being utilized on an increasing scale for the synthesis of vitamins, drugs, and fragrances. AbstractOrganomercurials have been known since 1850 and many synthetic routes to these compounds presently exist. The ability of these compounds to accommodate a wide variety of functional groups and to tolerate quite diverse reaction conditions makes them attractive as synthetic intermediates. AbstractSolid ionic conductors, also called solid electrolytes, transport electric current by means of ions. The best known examples of these usually crystalline compounds include doped ZrO2, as well as AgI, β‐Al2O3, and CaF2. Ionic conduction in solid electrolytes reaches its maximum value if a partial lattice of a solid compound undergoes transition at elevated temperature to a quasimolten state. The ionic conductivity in such solid compounds is then as high as in molten salts.
