AbstractThe nature of the biochemical abnormalities in over a hundred inherited diseases of humans is now convincingly established. This impressive achievement has provided numerous practical benefits, amongst which are: 1. accurate methods for the diagnosis of patients with these diseases; 2. identification of symptom‐free heterozygous carriers of the defective genes; and 3. procedures for the antenatal detection of a large number of these disorders in fetuses. It is anticipated that equally impressive advances will be made in the future regarding the therapy for patients with these diseases who escape prenatal detection, or in cases when an affected fetus is identified but is carried to term in compliance with the decision of the parents. The current concepts regarding the therapy of heritable metabolic diseases are outlined and potential innovations for future corrective procedures are indicated in this repor

AbstractThere is no straightforward relation between the ground electron configuration of the neutral atom and the chemistry of a given element. In particular, the choice of oxidation state depends on the comparison between consecutive ionization energies of the gaseous ions and the hydration energy or Madelung energy which by preference stabilizes increased oxidation numbers. Special ligands, such as oxide, may introduce unexpectedly high oxidation numbers. The baricenters of electron configurations are discussed with vanadium and thorium as specific examples. The chemistry of the elements with Z = 101, 102, 103, 104, 105, and 112 (of which some thousand atoms have been reported) and the (yet unknown) elements with Z=108, 109, 114, 126, 164, and 184 is discussed.

AbstractThe optical activity can provide detailed information about the configuration and conformation of methane derivatives if the chirality function is resolved, according to the theory of chirality functions[3]and the quantum mechanical theory of the optical activity of methane derivatives[4], into its components which are compared with experimental data. A first step in this direction is undertaken in the present article and it will be shown that the second approximation method for determining the conformationally independent contribution to the optical activity yields quantitatively good results. Description of the overall optical rotation by this component is expectedly poor where interactions between ligands,e. g.hydrogen bonding, tend to favor specific conformations. A quantitative understanding of such additional effects appears promising in conjunction with analyses of the kind described.

AbstractThe perturbation method of treating chemical reactions is discussed in a simple manner, by invoking the general hypothesis that theinitial perturbation determines the course of a reaction.This approach is used to develop a general theory, as an alternative to the transition state theory. Such apparently diverse concepts as the symmetry rules for cyclic processes, and hard and soft acids and bases can be derived by this treatment, which is applied to radical reactions and aliphatic and aromatic substitution.

AbstractFerritin is the major iron storage protein of mammals and consists of up to 4500 atoms of ferric iron surrounded by a shell of protein subunits. The protein component, apoferritin, consists of 24 identical polypeptide chains each of molecular weight 18500. The function of ferritin is to store iron in a soluble form from which it can be readily mobilized. Recent results concerning the structure of the protein are reported, and progress in the elucidation of the mechanisms whereby iron is introduced into apoferritin and released from ferritin is reviewed.
