AbstractThe concentration of vitamin C in individual tomatoes shows considerable variation from fruit to fruit. Average values indicate that ripe fruits arc richer in vitamin C than unripe fruits and that outdoor grown tomatoes are richer than those grown in greenhouses; no significant differences occurred between the varieties studied. Some of the individual fruits analysed in 1945 were found to contain a comparatively high concentration of dehydroascorbic acid.

AbstractThe present paper records results of blending water with a variety of organic solvents, using various types of soaps in an attempt to provide a basis for an explanation of the phenomenon of blending. Amine salts of the fatty acids and cation active detergents have been used, since ordinary soaps are not sufficiently soluble at room temperature.

AbstractA study has been nude of the effect of variation in coating thick‐ ness (from 2 to 13 02. per basis box) on the quality of clectro‐tinplate deposited from t i e stannous sulphate and sodium state baths, respectively. Using from two to ten specimens for each determintion, CUNCS have been obtained showing the influence of coating thickness on the thiocyanate, hot‐water porosity, humidity, and salt spray test VBIUCS, and showing the effect of time of exposure out‐of‐ doors on weight increment for a range of coating thicknesses. All of the tests reveal a deterioration in the quality of the deposits as the thickness diminishes. There is a certain minimum thickness, varying somewhat according to the nature of the test applied, below which this deterioration is npid. As estimated by the thiocyanate, hot‐water porosity, humidity, and salt spny tests this minimum thickness is in the vicinity of 12 02. pe

AbstractThe quality of electro‐tinned coatings (8 02. per basis bos) from the alkaline and acid baths, on steel, has been determined by means of the thiocyanate test, humidity chamber test and visual appearance after the following pre‐plating treatments : pickling in various acid baths, anodic etching in sulphuric acid, and anodic p.ickling in inhibited sulphuric acid. Coatings of equal1 high quallty can be deposited from cithcr bath, but the deposit {om the alkaline bath is less sensitive to pickling procedure than IS that from the acld bath. The best prc‐treatment for alkaline bath deposits is pickling in inhibited sulphuric acid, and for acid bath deposits 1s anodic etching in sulphuric acid. Pickling in hydrochloric acld cads to coatings of slightly lower quality, but is equally effective with alkaline and acid bath dcposits'and there is no deterioration on prolonging the pickling time up to 5 mi

AbstractAn examination of the unsaponifiable fraction of the distillates obtained during the industrial process of deodorisation of vegetable oils has revealed the presence in those from groundnut oil, palm oil, cottonseed oil and sunflower seed oil of a high proportion of terpenes accompanied by a smaller proportion of aliphatic hydrocarbons and minor amounts of hydroxy compounds and ketones. In the distillates from palm kernel oil and coconut oil, where there was a preponderance of methyl ketones, the proportions of terpene and aliphatic hydrocarbons were about equal; small quantities of carbinols were associated with the ketones.

AbstractThis paper discusses the factors controlling the rate of loss of plasticiser from polyvinyl chloride compositions to a surrounding gas phase. These are (a) the rate of diffusion in the solid phase or (b) that in the gas phase; for any set of conditions one or other of these will usually be predominant. The rate of desorption from the solid to the gas phase is not considered likely to be a controlling factor in practical circumstances. When gas phase diffusion is rate‐controlling, the loss rate will depend greatly on the degree of turbulence in the gas phase. Since the diffusion contents of ordinary plasticisers calculated from Gilliland's equation1 do not differ as much as the vapour pressures of the plasticisers, the rate of loss will be roughly proportional to the vapour pressure, at different temperatures or for different plasticisers. AbstractThe mixed glyecrides of rape oil were separated by systematic crystallisation from acetone at low temperatures into three fractions, each less complex in composition than the whole fat. The component acids of each fraction were determined, after preliminary resolution into two groups by low‐temperature crystallisation from acetone or ether, by ester‐fractionation. Spectrographs analysis of alkali‐isomerised acids from selected ester‐fractions showed the presence of more linolenic acid than ha hitherto been reported, and also of small amounts of a docosadienoic acid, C22H10O2. The component acids of the rape oil included myristic o·2%, palmitic 2·2%, stearic 0·4%, arachidic 0·5%, behenic 1·5%, lignoceric 0·8%, with hexadecenoic 0·1%, oleic 15·2%, linoleic i6·0%, linolcnic 7·0%, erucic 53·8%, and docosadicnoic 2·3% (W/W).
