SummaryThe debate over democratised school government continues and is particularly pertinent at a time when legislation is proposed which aims to significantly alter the system in favour of the parent interest. This article describes a research project, undertaken in Birmingham from 1981‐1985, which investigated how a system of democratised primary school government, in which parents were prominent, was functioning after three years experience.The findings suggest that reforming governing bodies in this manner is an effective, acceptable and practicable reform. These bodies were achieving some success in liaising with, monitoring and supporting the school, but administrative and structural factors were inhibiting their influence.The system in Birmingham provides a creditable exemplar of a policy of democratised school government in practice and is able to offer a number of strategies and guidelines for those currently concerned with developing and improving polic

AbstractThe present study investigated the attitudes of 80 first‐year students in a college of higher education towards homosexuals, lesbian women, gay men and ‘homosexuality and education’ using specially constructed scales. An attempt was also made to assess the effect of a short unit on ‘homosexuality and education’ on the attitudes of students following a foundation course in Educational Studies. Test‐retest reliabilities over a one‐week interval were very satisfactory and the scales were highly inter‐correlated. Consistent with earlier research evidence significant sex differences emerged, with men being less tolerant than women towards homosexuals in general, gay men and greater openness in education. For the lesbian women scale, in contrast, men expressed more positive attitudes, with particularly clear and significant differences in this direction emerging for three lesbian items. Students who rated themselves as other than exclusively heterosexual and as having lesbian and gay acquaintances, were generally more positive in their attitudes, with the exception of men in relation to the ‘homosexuality and education’ scale. Finally, experience of a unit on homosexuality and education appeared to result in a significant shift in male students’ attitudes towards gay men, but in general the changes observed between pretest and post‐test were slight. AbstractThe Outstation Programme is a research‐based, part‐time MA for practising teachers which has several innovatory features. The most distinctive is that the teachers are recruited in teams. Research into the experiences of participants provided insights into the ways in which teams operate and what the notion of a ‘team’ actually meant for team members. It revealed that the nature of team collaboration did not meet the expectations of the programme. Reflection and action were predominantly individualistic, owing to constraints in the programme itself and in the culture of schools. However, it was found that teams fulfil several important functions which facilitate progress through the programme and enhance the capacity of individuals to bring about change through the research

SummaryWithin a framework which includes a review of the comparative strengths of questionnaire and interview based research and of the use of the telephone within both traditions, an account is given of an apparently innovative technique used to, evaluate the trials of an educational database. As work had to be conducted quickly to a low budget and in respect of dispersed respondents, a postal questionnaire followed by telephone interview technique was devised and implemented. The paper concentrates on a critical review of the processes involved, and points to areas of future research development.

AbstractThe same cohort of B.Ed, students were studied during their four years at college by means of value priority and Likert attitude scales and interviews. Personal activities were increasingly more highly rated than religious or moral; only ‘core’ religious activities resisted this trend. Mean religious attitudes were negative only in Year 3. However mean moral attitudes became increasingly more negative in Years 3 and 4 than in previous years. SummaryIt is shown that some commonly used indices can be misleading in their quantification of reliability. The effects are seen most vividly in assessing the reliability of gain or difference scores. In addition, it is explained that the calculation of all the currently used indices is based on a wrong assumption about the value of the correlation coefficient between true and error scores being zero. The practical effects of using this wrong assumption are shown to be very significant. Proposals are made to avoid both these sources of invalidity using a procedure to assess reliability in terms of upper and lower limits for the true scores of each examinee.
