Whole blood collected in ACD or ACD with adenine was studied as units stored with or without plasma over 14 to 28 days. Comparisons were made using various tests, with posttransfusion survivalin vivobeing the primary guideline. The adverse effects which resulted from storage appeared more slowly in units with plasma than in units without plasma. The inclusion of adenine to either packed or nonpacked units was associated with even less evidence of storage damage. Using the criterion of over 70 per cent recovery in 24 hours as signifying adequate preservation, the average survival value for each group was better when the plasma was present, and even higher when adenine had been added. All tested groups had average values exceeding 70 per cent recovery after 21 days of storage. Blood stored for 28 days with adenine had over 70 per cent recovery with or without plasma. Though the storage damage became more apparent in units without plasma, the average survival value would suggest that the packed units were still useful after 21 days of storage, with extension to 28 days when ACD with adenine was used.

Human red blood cells preserved with approximately 45 per cent w/v glycerol, frozen by the slow freeze‐thaw technic, and stored at ‐80 C for up to six years were evaluated by measurements of the posttransfusion survival of autologous51chromium‐labeled red blood cells, the per cent recovery of the preserved red blood cells, supernatant hemoglobin in the unit, and intracellular potassium levels. The glycerolized red blood cells were washed either with electrolyte solutions using continuous centrifugation, or by dilution with nonelectrolyte solutions and recovery of the red blood cells by agglomeration (Huggins technic). Glycerolized red blood cells stored frozen for more than two years and washed by the Huggins technic had significantly decreased postthaw stability when the de‐glycerolized red blood cells were kept after thawing for longer than four hours at 4 C. Glycerolized red blood cells stored frozen for up to six years and washed by continuous centrifugation with electrolyte solutions showed clinically acceptable post‐transfusion survival after postthaw storage at 4 C for up to 24 hours. The results of washing glycerolized red blood cells by continuous centrifugation showed that prior dilution of the thawed cells with a ten per cent glycerol solution was vitally important. It is proposed that Bayes' Theorem be used to maintain an estimate of probability that each individual donor is a hepatitis carrier. It is suggested that there exists a critical probability, above which prospective donors should be rejected. Various factors in hepatitis epidemiology that complicate implementation are discussed.

Potential clinical and hematologic complications were studied in 18 baboons subjected to cross circulation for periods of five to 31 days. Cross circulation was a safe procedure during the first four days. After that time, anaphylactoid reactions potentially fatal for one or both partners, thrombocytopenia, leukopenia, hemolytic anemia, and in one case, marrow depression were seen. These reactions were ameliorated but not entirely controlled by administration of methotrexate. When cross circulation was discontinued after five to 31 days, eight of nine baboons showed prompt clinical and hematologic recovery without late sequelae.

Four groups of patients were examined serologically for hemagglutinating antipenicillin antibodies (HAPA). The incidence of HAPA was found to be 21.8 per cent in patients with rheumatoid arthritis or systemic lupus erythematosus, 37.8 per cent in patients treated with penicillin for syphilis, 7.9 per cent in patients with cardiovascular disease and 22.2 per cent in patients with penicillin allergies. These incidences were significantly higher than the 3.1 per cent frequency noted in healthy individuals donating blood in this survey.Although the reasons for the high incidences of HAPA vary for the patient groups, this study indicates that a substantial number of patients are at risk of developing positive direct antiglobulin reactions and/or acquired hemolytic anemias if treated with penicillin.

The sera from two patients with unexplained anemia gave a pattern of agglutinationin vitrowhich was the converse of that described for Rh‐like antibodies associated with autoimmune hemolytic anemia.
