Changes in the agglutinability of group A red blood cells were detected in 11 of 30 group A children with acute leukemia over a 12‐month period. Increased activity of blood‐group substance A was found over a three‐month period in the serum of a Negro who was group A1and a secretor of A and H. Two of his children, A1B secretors, possessed the same feature, but two other children (A1and A1B secretors) did not. A 15‐year experience with the transfusion of blood from donors with polycythemia vera is summarized. For no valid scientific reason a fine source of donor blood has been largely ignored. In the study reported, not only has the expected benefit occurred following transfusion from polycythemic donors, but there has been freedom from possible adverse late sequelae. Fifty‐six recipients have lived from two to thirteen years; 20 recipients are still being followed. In no instance was a new case of cancer or of polycythemia vera discovered in the recipient. In addition, there is a provocative possibility that cancer occurs less often than expected in the recipient of such transfusions. At least the procedure has not been proven harmful, and the authors suggest that a valuable source of blood donation, the healthy donor with polycythemia vera, should be employed routin

Total hemolytic complement activity was measured periodically in citrated samples of whole human blood stored for three weeks under usual blood bank conditions. The loss of complement was gradual; an average of 97 per cent of the total activity remained after one week and 90 per cent after three weeks.

A new technic is presented for continuous plasma and whole‐blood exchange transfusions, using the NCI‐IBM continuous‐flow Blood Cell Separator. An additional case of hepatic coma resulting from acute fulminant infectious hepatitis unresponsive to conservative management treated with exchange transfusions is reported. During six exchanges, 39.5 liters of the patient's plasma and whole blood were replaced without clinical improvement.
