摘要:
This paper examines issues involved in the automation of the engineering design process. The different generic design processes are categorized, and a design methodology based on generating innovative combinations is described. This methodology is applied to the structural design problem, and a number of example problems are solved. The first part of this paper introduces the issues involved in designing engineering systems, and describes a generalized method that can be used to describe and solve problems of design. The second part presents a general and consistent methodology for the representation of engineering knowledge, which can be used to solve a wide variety of problems. In the third part, the implementation of a design program is described, a structural design problem is solved, and an analysis of the performance of the design methodology is made. Finally, the authors reflect on the future of engineering design through Al techniques, and on the practical applications of these developments.

This article describes the development and implementation of an integrated hydrological management and reporting system on a microcomputer. The system involves the use of peripherals for digitizing, EPROM (Erasable Programmable Read Only Memory) or RAM downloading, storage, reporting, and archiving of hydrological data. Hydrological information is stored on hard disk in compact formats according to the type of data. Self‐correcting data routines coupled with simple screen drivers for user interfacing allow semiskilled operators to use the system. 摘要:
The design and implementation of a microcomputer‐based expert system (ES) to assist the regulatory review of hazardous waste surface impoundment dikes is discussed. DIKE(2.0) employs a “goal‐dominated” ES shell architecture linked with a battery of external diagnostic algorithm programs to overcome many of the difficulties inherent to regulatory review and microcomputer applications. The system assists reviewers in interpreting the required design information, applies relatively sophisticated engineering analyses to seek possible design flaws, and assists in the interpretation of all automated computations. Amicrocomputer system for the layout and design of polyethylene intermediate‐pressure gas networks is presented. The procedure is designed for use on an IBM‐XT compatible machine with an EGA card that has full interactive graphical features. The program performs hydraulic design calculations and cost analyses of networks with layouts obtained using the Minimum Spanning Tree algorithm. Procedures derived from properties of Steiner trees and a simple “expert system” have been incorporated in the program to overcome the rectilinear requirements of pipeline layout. 摘要:
Visual aids in the form of graphs and charts are often used in analysis and design procedures. Commonly, a graph is divided into regions of common characteristics, such as in a soil classification scheme in which a set of properties are located on a chart and the soil classification is given. Although these aids are useful in hand calculations, it is often difficult to implement these charts into a computer code. A general technique is described in this paper which can simplify both implementation and the regional coordinate analysis by the use of an area coordinate method. An example and a short Fortran code are also included to show how this technique can be used.
