Formulae have been derived which relate the equilibrium scour depth upstream of cylindricalbridge piers caused by horseshoe vortex systems to various flow parameters. Assumptionshave been made concerning the vortex size and shape during the scouring processand concerning the forces on particles within the scour hole.

摘要:
Although the velocity gradient,is a parameter common to almost all the phenomenlogicaltheories of turbulence and turbulent mixing, relatively few accurateevaluations of this factor have been made (3). Most experimental values of thevelocity gradient in turbulent flow have been determined indirectly by firstobtaining an experimental velocity profile and then graphically differentiating thisprofile. Thus,reflects errors made in measuring the velocity profile and errorsmade in obtaining the derivative of this profile by graphical techniques. Hence, theaccuracy ofand the subsequent mixing length and transfer coefficient calculationscould be improved if an experimental method of obtainingdirectly in fully-developed,two-dimensional, turbulent boundary layer flow were available. The devicewas calibrated in a rectangular duct, and the results clearly demonstrate the validityof the design and the feasibility of measuringdirectly and accurately.

摘要:
An experimental investigation of vertical mixing induced by wind,or by a screen which moved horizontallyover the water surface, was carried out in a wind-wave channel similar to that of Wu [27].It was found that,in the wind-wave channel, the entrainment rate due to the shear stress, which wasexerted on the water surface by the moving screen, was two orders of magnitude smaller than the oneobtained in similar experiments, which were carried out in an annular tank by Kato & Phillips [11],Kantha [9], and Kantha et al [10].
