SUMMARYThe structure of the wood of the generaCastilla, Helicostylis, Maquira, Naucleopsis, Olmedia, PerebeaandPseudolmedia, considered to belong in the Olmedieae (cf. Berg1972) is described. The diversity in anatomical structure between the genera is small, and it is hard to distinguishMaquira, PerebeaandPseudolmediafrom each other.Castillacan be recognized by its thin‐walled and wide‐lumined fibres,Helicostylisby its parenchyma distribution,Naucleopsis(usually) by its more numerous vessels with a smaller diameter. A more marked difference is shown by the monotypic genusOlmediawith apotracheal banded parenchyma instead of the paratracheal aliform to confluent‐banded parenchyma of the other genera. Septate fibres, which are characteristic for the other genera – some species ofHelicostylisexcepted – are nearly completely absent inOlmedia. This structural difference is considered as an argument in favour of the exclusion ofOlmediafrom the tribe Olmedieae (

SUMMARYThe influence of different light intensities on the vegetative growth and CO2‐exchange characteristics ofCirsium palustreandGeum urbanumwere studied in order to give a possible explanation for the different behaviour of the two species in the ash coppice cycle. The shade avoiding speciesC. palustreshowed shade tolerant characteristics, whereas the species which avoids exposed conditions,G. urbanum, grew well in full daylight. SUMMARYRegenerating protoplasts of the basidiomyceteSchizophyllum communewere labelled with radioactive N‐acetylglucosamine. The label was mainly incorporated in the alkali‐insoluble wall fractions R‐glucan (containing some hexosamine) and chitin. Light microscopic autoradiography showed a uniformly dispersed incorporation of label in primary cells and chain‐cells but emerged hyphae revealed a highly localized incorporation at the hyphal apex. Electron microscopic autoradiography showed that the label mainly appeared just outside the plasmalemma in the wall suggesting that chitin and R‐glucan are synthesized at the plasmalemma/cell wall

SUMMARYGrowth of Indonesian C4and C3grasses was compared in field experiments in Indonesia and in growth chamber experiments in the Netherlands. Two C4species,Axonopus compressus(Swartz) Beauv. andSetaria plicata(Lamk.) T. Cooke, were used and one C3species,Oplismenus compositus(L.) Beauv.Both the field and the growth chamber experiments showed no large differences in relative growth rate between the C3and the C4grasses, grown at high light intensities, neither with a high, nor with a low water supply.Net photosynthesis of the C3species was lower than that of the C4species at all growth and experimental conditions. Whenever this resulted in a lower unit leaf rate of the C3species, this disadvantage was overcome by formation of a larger leaf area.At very low light intensities, the C4speciesAxonopushad a lower relative growth rate than the C3speciesOplismenus. This may explain the absence of this C4grass in the deep shade.The absence of the C3species in open areas cannot be explained by a lower relative growth rate of this species at high light intensities. Other factors as a low shoot/root ratio, a high soluble sugar content and a high initial growth rate may give C4grasses a high competitive value over C3grasses in open and dry areas. Some of these factors may depend indirectly upon the C4mechanism of photosynthesis.
