Abstract—A combination of passive‐ and active‐matrix addressing is proposed by dividing the ITO columns of a passive‐matrix LCD in parts, thus only covering a group of rows. The ITO parts are connected to metal columns via TFTs. This leads to a significantly smaller number of TFTs, as compared to an active‐matrix LCD. The proposed system may either be driven as a switched passive matrix (SPM) with a low multiplexing factor, or as a multiplexed active matrix (MAM) by holding the voltages. Abstract—The electro‐optic behavior of antiferroelectric liquid‐crystal displays (LCDs) has been investigated. By choosing proper addressing waveforms, multiplex‐compatible analog gray‐scale driving schemes have been found. The schemes have been tested at different temperatures for assessing their use in real displays. Abstract—The repair of pixel defects on TFT‐LCDs, which is generally carried out with laser processing or by adopting a redundant structure, is very effective for high‐yield production. However, repair may result in abnormal pixel performance, usually due to the asymmetry of the applied pixel voltage. In this study, based on consideration of the dependence of the threshold contrast on the background luminance, the authors are able to determine the visibility of a repaired pixel. As a result, good agreement between measured and calculated visibility was obtained. Based on these results, we have proposed a new pixel design rule which enables complete repair of pixel defects that cannot be detected by the human eye. This design can also suppress the reduction of the aperture for TFT‐LCD panels.
