摘要:
Clinicians use clinical symptom, blood culture, and central venous catheter (CVC) culture data to detect CVC-related sepsis. The lack of clear and consistent definitions for what constitutes accurate clinical symptom assessments, coupled with the different combinations for blood and CVC culture results, contribute to clinicians’ uncertainty about the presence of CVC-related sepsis. When clinical symptoms do not correlate with laboratory culture results, patients are exposed to risks associated with CVC manipulation and inappropriate antibiotic therapy. Clinicians must recognize the sources of uncertainty when assessing patients for CVC-related sepsis.

摘要:
The use of biological products for transfusion is limited not only by availability but also by public concerns for safety. Pharmacological interventions are being used to address these issues. This article reviews the history of transfusions, and assesses the current and future hematopoietic substitutes and their impact on blood supply and safety.

摘要:
The healthcare environment has been impacted tremendously by higher patient acuity, cost-cutting measures, an increase in litigation, and increased expectations by an educated generation of healthcare consumers. This has led to the need to continually measure, assess, and improve quality. These activities must consider not only patient clinical outcomes, but also customer service ratings and financial outcomes. Quality improvement requires a collaborative approach to succeed, and the need to build a cohesive and effective multidisciplinary team is critical for positive outcomes. Strategies to build a culture of teamwork include incorporating total quality management principles into every level of the organization, seeking participation from every discipline and level of the organization, and recognizing employees for their efforts. Infusion nurses have an excellent opportunity to contribute their expertise to any multidisciplinary team that impacts the outcomes of infusion patients. In addition, team-building and quality improvement may prove to be excellent career moves for infusion nurses looking to further specialize their practice.

摘要:
Human skin provides a great living environment for the growth of microbes. The types and numbers of microbes vary according to the part of the human body and the age and gender of the individual. These microbes have a definite impact on the incidence of catheter-related infections. By understanding the process of how infections develop, appropriate choices can be made for techniques and methods that prevent these infections.

摘要:
This study investigated the curative effects of notoginseny cream versus Hirudoid cream in the treatment of postinfusion phlebitis. Sixty-five patients who received peripheral infusion therapy during a 20-month period and had developed phlebitis were divided randomly into two groups. Group A was treated with notoginseny cream, a topical Chinese medicine developed and produced by the pharmacological department of The Second Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-Sen University. Group B was treated with heparinoid cream (Hirudoid, a commercial product from Germany). Significantly fewer applications of notoginseny cream were required to bring about the disappearance of signs and symptoms of phlebitis in the group A patients as compared with the group B patients for the same effect. The actual time of disappearance of the signs and symptoms of phlebitis also were significantly shorter in patients treated with notoginseny cream than with heparinoid cream.
