Plastics vs the energy crunch-friend or foe!! Surely in a public opinion poll the results would be highly unfavorable to plastics. To members of the public that would have any opinion at all, plastic is oil in a solidified form. It is most commonly found as bleach bottles or as film to wrap meat. After one use it is sent to the trash can-an obvious waste of energy.

The 15-fold growth of the plastics industry in the past three decades has been based largely on the availability of low-cost petrochemical raw materials for both synthesis and process energy. In the past 5 years we have suddenly become aware that the dwindling supply of petroleum is producing a steady increase in both the cost of plastic materials and the cost of processing them. The U.S. Department of Energy is beginning to sponsor conferences and research projects in the plastics industry to help solve this growing problem [1].

摘要:
In a recent series of related papers [1,2], we called attention to the use of simple statistical distribution functions in the treatment of molecular size distributions of polymers. The basic distribution functions involved are the binomial, the Poisson, and the negative binomial distributions with discrete, nonzero variables. Depending on the physical conditions imposed, these distributions can be combined in a variety of ways to yield more complicated size distributions. Such combinations are exemplified by the convolution of distributions in addition polymers, the power series distribution for simple condensation polymers, the Lagrange distribution for branched polymers, etc. The most complicated case is a compound Lagrange distribution for the condensation of polymer chains with a primary size distribution [2].

Injection molding processes are inherently superior for mass production of intricate parts to high precision at low cost. Although the process is not new, there is very little fundamental understanding of its behavior and practically no theories have been established to characterize the process [1].
