摘要:
Several applications of live‐timer count correction are discussed with regard to the precision and statistical accuracy of results obtained. The method is compared to conventional real‐time operation with subsequent formula correction. For straightforward high‐precision counting, the live‐timer method is believed to be superior. Counting of sources which decay appreciably during the count, sometimes thought to be a case where automatic live‐timer correction fails, can be accomplished by choosing a certain readily calculable ratio of clock inhibit duration to paralysis. Similarly, coincidence counting with different channel paralyses is found to be amenable to live‐timer correction, with a resulting precision which exceeds that of formula corrections.

摘要:
A new pulse amplitude discriminator, especially suitable for counting experiments, has been developed. Ten units were built and tested, and all of the threshold temperature coefficients are in the range −0.03 to +0.12mV per °C. At very high rates the threshold is stable and the output pulse width and the dead time change negligibly. Since the unit incorporates a number of convenient features, including provision for automatic dead‐time correction, it is an extremely versatile instrument.

摘要:
A true random ratemeter which automatically corrects for dead time is described. The unit requires two inputs: the normal pulse input and a signal whose duration equals the dead time of the channel being monitored. Variations in dead time, whether they are random or not, are automatically accommodated. Accuracy is 1% on all ranges even at duty factors up to 99%.

摘要:
An instrument for automatic topping‐up of liquid nitrogen in Dewars is described, featuring small diameter (5 mm) splash‐proof level sensors on flexible leads. A 9 W flow‐controlling solenoid valve is directly driven by a reliable, low power circuit, which requires no readjustments. Standard, inexpensive components are used throughout.

摘要:
We have constructed a scintillation counter with a useful area 5.1 cm high by 61 cm long, to stop protons up to 160 MeV energy. The energy resolution and the variation of output over the face of the counter have been measured using 160 MeV protons. The percentage peak width is 1.6% (full width at half‐maximum) everywhere and the output varies, almost linearly, by 11.5% over the length of the counter and by about 1% over the height.

摘要:
A technique is described for processing thick nuclear research emulsions used for recording x‐ray or &ggr;‐ray spectral lines. The procedure is simpler than that employed when processing emulsions for nuclear tracks, yet low distortion is achieved.

摘要:
A rocket‐borne system to measure air density by detecting Rayleigh‐scattered light from an onboard light source is described. The system utilized a high intensity mercury arc lamp to produce a modulated light beam. Light scattered from air molecules in a portion of the light beam beyond the disturbances caused by the sounding rocket was viewed by an optical system. The light receiver output was synchronously detected and telemetered to ground for analysis. Details of the instrumentation and flight results are discussed.

摘要:
Mass spectra of evolved and diffused gases from a silver membrane oxygen leak have been obtained. Although the diffused gas was found to be almost exclusively oxygen, several important precautions were found necessary for its effective use, especially on sputter ion pumped vacuum systems.

摘要:
The ratio of incident electrons to electrons which participate in the multiplication process for continuous dynode electron multiplier arrays has been experimentally determined. For an array which had a geometrical transmission of 50%, it was found that 75% of the incident electron current reached the multiplication section of the array tubes. Of this percentage, 50% were considered to be initial electrons and the remaining 25% reflected or secondary electrons from the top electrode.

摘要:
A nonrelativistic expression relating the bombarding energy to the laboratory angle at which the energies of reaction products from two dissimilar nuclear reactions coincide is derived and discussed. Applications to accelerator beam energy measurement, detector angular calibration, and nuclear reaction experiment planning are considered.
