摘要:
A Tesla transformer similar to that suggested for transformer−type pulsed accelerators is described. The theory is outlined and computational results presented for representative losses under various conditions of tuning and coupling. The behaviour of an experimental transformer housed in an SF6−filled pressure vessel is discussed. The device has a tuning ratio of 1.1, a voltage coefficient of 0.85, and a coupling coefficient of 0.37. The influence of eddy currents induced in the pressure vessel wall on the coupling coefficient and tuning ratio is noted. The particular transformer described can provide a 2.5 MV peak at the third half cycle of the secondary output voltage.

An optical instrument for measuring internal waves at the interface between two fluids in a wave tank is described. The sensor is constructed of acrylic plastic and uses a cadmium sulfide photo−sensitive resistor. This system requires that one of the fluids be transparent.

Three cavity resonators for the investigation of the electrical surface characteristics of conductors at millimeter−wave frequencies are described. They are anH−guide resonator and two rectangular cavity resonators optimized to give high accuracy and good repeatability of measurements. The investigation in which these cavities are used involvesQ−value measurements at 35 Ghz with polished and rough surfaces.

摘要:
A photoelectric instrument is described, giving directly in digital form the ratio of the mean square value of the current fluctuations (owing only to atmospheric star scintillation) and the square of the mean value of the current (owing to the star signal). This ratio is the measure of the atmospheric scintillation. The instrument was used for atmospheric optical quality measurements in connection with the European project JOSO (Joint Organization for Solar Observations).

摘要:
An apparatus is described which greatly facilitates the measurement of Seebeck coefficients on materials with low electrical conductivity for use in charge transport studies. A temperature programmer is included in the system and data are recorded automatically, thereby eliminating the need for manual measurements. Special instruments and connections are used to reduce leakage of the thermally generated Seebeck voltage. The apparatus has been especially designed for polymeric films and fibers and a simple and inexpensive method for mounting and testing fiber specimens has been developed. The various types of Seebeck experiments that can be performed with this system and the problems encountered with low conductivity samples are described.

In electrostatic quadrupoles, which are used to focus state−selected beams of polar molecules, it is customary to use a beam stop to prevent the direct nonfocused beam from striking the detector. An alternative method would be the use of a pair of electrostatic quadrupoles with a central collimating orifice, as described below, to separate the state−selected beam from the parent beam. It is shown that, in general, a double quadrupole system with a central orifice has a much lower background signal and can have a larger transmission than the quadrupole system using a beam stop. The arguments given are for a lens system containing no field−free regions; the extension to a system with field−free regions is straightforward.

A rotating anode x−ray generator has been constructed of simplified design, with the elimination of unnecessary complexities. The design incorporates magnetic fluid ’’Ferrofluidic’’ vacuum seals and Wilson water seals. The rotor is 10 cm diam and the tube body is 5 cm wide. The tube is demountable at several points for easy replacement of rotor and cathode assemblies. The complete unit is contained within a framework 1.52×0.61 m.

A device is described to display continuously on a CRT the emittance of an ion beam. The system uses electrostatic deflectors and small apertures to scan the beam’s phase−space position and momentum coordinates. Measurements are reported of the emittance and brightness of the following beams produced by five different ion sources: H−, D−, He+, He−, C−, D2−, O−, NH2−, A+, and Cu−. Also investigated was the emittance of an H−beam from a duoplasmatron direct−extraction source as a function of the radial displacement of thezwischenelectrode, and the phase−space particle density distribution of an H−beam was measured.
