SummaryENDOGAMY AND ECONOMIC SYSTEM IN A FRENCH VILLAGEThe analysis of endogamy and of socially accepted relations is vital for an understanding of the relevant aspects of social life, particularly for a deeper knowledge of the relations between man and the land. In the village economy, which is dominated by market laws and characterized by owner–cultivation, land property is a means of increasing economic power. Thus, it holds a decisive position regarding family relations and marriage. These relations have an instrumental role in the inheritance and use of land.

SummarySOCIETAL TYPES AND DEVELOPMENT STRATEGIESThis article asserts that agents of social change have often narrowly conceived and thus misinterpreted the nature of their target systems, especially target systems at the macro–level – societies. Change programs initiated within such limited or distorted conceptions would undoubtedly have serious negative consequences. At present, the modernization process has come to be appreciated as a very complex phenomenon for which the customary societal dichotomies of social theorists have been found seriously wanting and in need of revision and expansive interpretation.Drawing upon the contributions of a number of contemporary thinkers who have pioneered this new typologizing effort, the author proposes a tentative paradigm which in expanded form, he suggests, could be employed as a tool or simulation device by change agents in the general assessment of infrastructural characteristics and its implications for program decisions. The paradigm posits three ideal–typical societal orders: the folk, the feudal, and the urban–industrial – all of which, as constructed, are asserted to have potentially both diachronic and synchronic comparative application.Following some of the arguments of the theorist Sjoberg (1952), the final section of the article attempts to focus upon certain of the more salient characteristics of each of these societal types and to note how they bear different implications for development strategies.RésuméTYPOLOGIES DBS SOCIéTéS ET STRATEGIES DU DéVELOPPEMENTLes agents du changement social ont, souvent, conçu de maniére trop étroite et de ce fait, mal interprété la nature de leurs objectifs, particuliérement au niveau macrosociologique.

SummaryCONCEPTUALIZING AND MEASURING THE DIFFUSION OF INNOVATIONSThis presentation has discussed a conceptualization and measurement of extent of diffusion that closely approximates the theoretical definition of diffusion as the spread of an innovation. Rather than equating extent of diffusion with the proportion of adoption units in the adoption stage it is equated with the proportion of adoption units in each stage of the adoption process. The discussion illustrates the application of this conceptualization to the analysis of empirical data and shows its utility in comparing changes in extent of diffusion over time as well as in comparing the extent of diffusion of two or more innovations at one point in time.RésuméLA DIFFUSION DE l'INNOVATION‐CONCEPTUALISATION ET MESURECet article expose une conceptualisation et une méthode de mesure nouvelles du degré de diffusion de l'innovation. l' évaluation classique du degré de diffusion de l'innovation était centrée sur la proportion des unités d'adoption, utilisateurs de l'innovation.

SummaryRUKAL NO OPINION POPULATION ANALYSIS OF A PUBLIC OPINION POLL IN BAVARIAStimulated by a paper given by Leverkus‐Brüninga secondary analysis of a representative public opinion survey among rural population in Bavaria, Western Germany, has been carried out. The survey itself dealt with the self‐image of the peasantry. The source of no opinion‐voting in this survey of self‐image and the structure of people answering this way are analysed. The major part of no opinion‐voting is derived from items like religion and church, economy and profession, politics and also rural‐urban conditions. Missing knowledge more rarely is a source of no opinion‐voting than uncertainty and missing energy to come to a determination. The extent to which no opinion‐votes were given is as a whole quite less than is known from other polls dealing with rural respondents (Leverkus‐Brüning). The structure of the people giving no opinion‐votes is analysed by two factor analyses, by correlations between the extent of no opinion‐voting and some predictors (declaring variables), and by the mean average of no opinion‐voting. Respondents with the following attributes were above average: female, badly educated, living on small farms or on subsidiary holdings, aged over 40. Correlations between no opinion‐voting and variables marking the respondents' environmental situation may be explained by the interrelationships between personal and economic data from which the environmental variables are derived.RésuméLA POPULATION RURALE SANS OPINION ANALYSE D'UN SONDAGE D'OPINION EN BAVIEREA la suite d'un article de Leverkus‐Brüning, l' analyse d'un sondage d'opinion publique, effectué parmi des populations rurales de Bavière (R.F.A.) a été entreprise.
