AbstractWeak theoretical skills on the part of rural sociologists are hardly ever blamed as possible causes for the lack of fertility of the sub‐discipline. Reasons are advanced only at paradigmatic and/or methodological levels. This article is intended, however, to illustrate the following points. First, the higher the quality of conceptualization, the less the conceptualization can be applied in an indiscriminate way; second, perception of analysable topics depends upon the theoretical potential of the scientist. This is illustrated by re‐analyzing Germani's theory of modernization. Following a synthesis of Germani's views, the study focuses on three items which have an impact on rural sociology, irrespective of the field of research, namely development as selectively monitored possibilities, the impossibility of unilinear evolution, and the ubiquity of power and the birth of meta‐power in modern society. Within each item there appears to be more than ample scope for prolific rural sociological reflection and research. In concluding, the author refers to the sociology of agriculture. If modern farming is to be seen as the activity both of capable participants in the social dialogue (Giddens) and of deliberate actors (Germani), then the deterioration of their socio‐economic position is a puzzle requiring a sociologically specific explanation. The author's thesis is that the type of knowledge used as a resource by farmers in their professional “negotiations” with the agencies constituting today's farm business environment, is a major cause of this deterioration.RésuméLe peu de fécondité dont fait preuve la sociologie rurale est il dûà des raisons théoriques ou méthodologiques comme on ľ avance toujours, ou plutôt aux faibles competences théoriques des sociologues ruraux?

AbstractAlthough Marx and Engels wrote relatively little about agriculture the subsequent discussion has been in inverse proportion to the amount they wrote. This paper analyses recent contributions to this body of theory, notably the problems presented by simple commodity production in agriculture, arguing that many of these problems originate in specific historical situations. It is suggested that other distinctions in Marx's work are more rewarding to pursue, such as the distinction between formal and real subsumption under capitalism. The limits of real subsumption depend on the extent to which various capitals are able to drive technology into revolutionising the labour process. Finally, the role of ideology is considered as essential to the legitimation of these processes in Western capitalist societies.RésuméLes écrits de Marx et Engels sur ľagriculture sont relativement peu nombreux, mais c'est ?eux que cet article s'inspire essentiellement.

AbstractPart‐time family agricultural production affects a significant proportion of the population in countries like Hungary, where the extensive industrialization process has been completed, and where the agricultural system has been collectivized. While die majority of these producers remained subsistence farmers the proportion of those who produce for markets, who could be regarded as ‘entrepreneurs’, has been on the increase. The purpose of this article is to explore the sociological character of family agricultural producers with particular reference to the emergent new rural entrepreneurs. We argue that current entrepreneurship could be understood as the resurfacing of the rural embourgeoise‐ment process, which was interrupted by state socialist transformation of the rural social structure after 1949. We also assume that life history, the character of jobs people held while entrepreneurial activities were not possible, will significantly modify the impact of family background. With the re‐emergence of entrepreneurship, the rural stratification system changes. While the earlier state socialist stratification system was a single hierarchy in which power and privilege were determined by bureaucratic rank, today Hungarian rural society can be more accurately described as having a dual system of social stratification in which the dominant bureaucratic rank hierarchy is now complemented by a market based system of inequalities. We stress historical continuity too in this respect: die rural stratification system in Hungary has traditionally been a dual one in which market based inequalities and entrepreneurship played only a complementary role.RésuméĽagriculture à temps partiel concerne une pan significative de la population dans un pays comme la Hongrie oú le processus ?industrialisation extensive est achevé et oúľagriculture a été collectivisée.

AbstractThe article reviews extension science from its beginnings to where it is heading now. As the body of knowledge which supports and learns from professionals, managers and trainers in extension, it formulates decision‐oriented propositions about communication interventions to change voluntary behaviours with collective effect. The increasing importance of such interventions is explained by public science‐based efforts to change behaviour in health, traffic safety, agriculture, etc.; the need for professionalism in the overloaded information market; the determinant role knowledge utilisation acquires in development as essential bottlenecks are removed; and the growing need to adapt intentionality to feasibility. Starting from its original question (how do I get them where I want them?) and its sequel (why don't they do what I want them to do?), the article follows the sequence of extension science emphases: resistance to change, innovation diffusion, target categories, countervailing utili‐ser systems and, presently, knowledge systems which see extension, research and utilisers as a synergetic whole.
