AbstractOne result of recent empirical research into the household‐formation systems of rural Europe during the pre‐industrial era has been an increasing emphasis upon variations in norms governing these formations among different European regions. Relatively little attention, however, has been directed toward understanding the origins of these regional variations, or (in view of the inevitable problems of available source material) empirically tracing these regional variations further backward in time. Historical sociologists and anthropologists concerned with pre‐1500 European household systems have rather tended to concentrate upon the emergence of Christian or post‐classical family systems in general. But recently more detailed work in quasi‐census‐type material in three widely scattered regions ‐ late‐Byzantine Greece, early‐Renaissance Tuscany, and late‐medieval England ‐has made it possible to argue that the broad regional variations now established for these regions on the eve of industrialisation now seem discernible from a much earlier era. Brief consideration of the empirical data for household sizes and types, and comparisons with later material, help to elucidate this.

AbstractThe province of Minho in the north west of Portugal has long been regarded as a differentiated cultural region of Portugal. This paper begins with a brief presentation of the evidence on household composition in this region published so far, which offers new arguments about the identification of this province's characteristics. The existence of significant proportions of complex family households is related to patterns of post‐marital residence, to demographic features and to strategies of patrimony devolution. The pattern of household composition allows a degree of variation both within each community and across the region. These differences do not imply, however, that different social processes are at work., It is argued that residence should not be given too much importance, but rather be considered as one process among others. The process of household formation is then analysed in a broader social context and related to factors such as forms of labour and patterns of female employment. The authors suggest that some features of rural society in Minho raise substantial problems as far as the use of the ‘classic peasantry’ as a theoretical reference in studies of an historical nature is concerned, and point to new avenues that may help to foster our knowledge and understanding of historical rural societies in Europe.RésuméLa province du Minho, au nord‐ouest du Portugal, est depuis longtemps considérée commeune région culturellement différenciée.

AbstractThis article is concerned with the slow erosion of traditional legal and social practices under the impact of industrialisation and of modernisation of farming in a rural district of Northern Catalonia (Spain) in the period following the Spanish Civil War (1936‐39). In the early 1940's the economy of the area was agrarian in character and the stem family, tied to a system of impartible inheritance, was the typical domestic and residential arrangement. When in the early 1960's industrialisation set in and many peasants left their farmsteads to migrate to town in search of new economic opportunities, family form was bound to change. Through a survey of over 500 cases of marriage, the paper examines the process of family transformation stressing the resilience of the stem family which, although a decaying institution in the modern conditions, has adapted well to the new situation both in the farming and the urban area of the rural district, in the absence of legal regulations specifically designed to update it.RésuméCet article étudie le lent affaiblissement de certaines pratiques sociales et juridiques du fait de ľindustrialisation et de la modernisation agricole dans une zone rurale de la Catalogne du Nord et depuis la guerre civile espagnole.

AbstractPublic protest actions by farm women, while remaining isolated, have become a conspicuous feature since late 1960s. If they are examined in the context of the dispute or campaign of which they formed part, the orchestrated nature of the actions studied ‐ which is confirmed by the description of the conditions under which they took place ‐ is revealed and makes it possible to analyse the contradictions among the practices and the presentation of the identity and issues involved. The paper attempts to explain the place of this type of action in the strategy adopted by farm women in entering the political sphere and to examine their role in challenging the social categories of gender. From the research that has been done, it seems that these actions express more a strategy of resistance and defence of the family farm than an autonomous feminine social movement in agriculture.RésuméLes actions de protestation publiques ?agricultrices, tout en restant ponctuelles, acquièrent depuis la fin des années 60 une ‘visibilité exceptionnelle’.

AbstractAt the beginning of the 1980s diversification appeared in developed countries, such as France, as an alternative to the model that prevailed in the 1950s. This model was founded on ‘modern’ agriculture, through the optimization of farming conditions and the rationalisation of technical and economic choices. There quickly arose resistance movements to this ‘dominant’ agriculture: the existence of pan‐time farmers and of alternative movements of an ‘ecological’ tendency. Similarly, movements linked to the defence of ‘locality’ were themselves expressions of diversity. These limits to the processes of simplification and intensification illustrate the need for an appraisal of regional and micro‐regional specificities, and of the balance of production from the global to the local level. The general economic situation, including an agricultural policy based on diversification, has helped to mobilise professional networks in defence of divergent interests. In this situation of internal crises, the social position of groups depends on their capacity to adapt to variable economic situations and on their power to impose and legitimate forms of diversification.

THE IMPACTS OF INDUSTRIAL GROWTH IN RURAL CENTRAL PORTUGAL*AbstractA major current change in rural Portugal is the growth of small scale manufacturing enterprises but little is known about the effects of this on labour markets and household budgets. Hence, a survey of 155 industrial workers in rural parts of central Portugal examined the applicability of the Italian ‘North‐East‐Centre’ (NEC) model of labour market and household economic changes. It established the differences in worker characteristics between an area of long‐standing industrial activity, two areas with significant artisanal sectors and theconcelhowhich is industrialising most rapidly. Particular attention is given to variations in the extent of part‐time employment in other activities, such as agriculture, and to other sources of household income.
AbstractLittle attention has been paid to the role of kinship in survival strategies for family farms in a capitalist farming environment. This case study of an upland farming community traces changes in kinship and inheritance, household structure and the socialisation of farm children over a period of 150 years. A stable pattern of farm holdings and the emergence of core families and dense highly active kin networks, encouraged by benevolent estate policies in the 19th century, have since been undermined by uncertainty of succession and economic pressures on small family farms. Farming is now dependent upon the labour resources of a nuclear household, weakened by outmigration of young adults. Kin networks are attenuated and economically inert. Farmers' wives are caught up in an increasingly ambiguous situation: their farm roles vary according to age and social origins. Conflict exists between the traditional socialisation of farm children for a future in farming and formal education in preparation for wider employment opportunities.
AbstractThe trend in most developed countries is for part time farms to increase relative to full time with growing emphasis on the Class II type mainly dependent on off farm sources of income and employment. The change from full time to part time farming could occur within the career of the farmer, by another household member taking a non‐farm job, at the point of inter‐generational transfer or by replacement of a full time by a part time farmer. Drawing on the literature and a recent survey of part time farming families in England and Wales, the paper assesses the importance of each type of transformation and the circumstances which favour it. It finds that while part time farming may slow down the rate of farm structural change at macro‐level it is nevertheless associated with a rapid turnover of people.
