SummaryClass&Community in English Commuter VillagesIn the study of mentally urbanised rural areas there has been a lack both of empirical investigation and of a conceptual framework. The studies within the London Metropolitan Region, reported here, demonstrate that the taking of employment outside the village has a less disruptive effect on the community's social structure than the introduction of a new class element. When new, mobile, managerial and professional commuters move into a village, they live in a completely different social and physical world from the village working class, and this has the effect of polarising the community on class lines, replacing the traditional hierarchical structure. Assuming continuing immigration into parts of rural England, some lines of research are suggested: the social origins and interaction patterns of subgroups of the middle class should be analysed, and further work conducted on the reactions to change in the working class community.

SummaryThis paper draws the main lines to be followed in the field of education aiming at a better development of the rural milieu. The first part describes the different psychological tests which can be used for measuring the levels of personality‐development, discusses their advantages and disadvantages with respect to types of rural populations studied, and explains which methods of testing appear to be the most preferable. In the second part an account is given of the methods to be used in education in developing countries, which should be based upon a deeper knowledge of the existing social‐psychological situation, which can be acquired by testing the population.RésuméPROBLÈMES PSYCHOSOCIOLOGIQUES DE LA PÉDAGOGIE RURALECe texte trace les grandes lignes d'une action rationnelle en matière de pédagogie du développement en milieu rural.

SummaryThe Position of the Coffee House in the Social Structure of the Greek VillageThe purpose of this study was to examine: (1) the position of the coffee house in the social structure of the village, and (2) the function of this position as part of the village social organisation. A random sample of close to 100 male adults of the Greek village of Stavropolis were interviewed.Villagers go to the coffee house for three main reasons: (1) to meet friends, (2) to hear news, and (3) to play games or drink. Of those interviewed, 95.5 per cent frequented the coffee house. Of these, 35.9 per cent went every day. Due to such intense interaction and the physical isolation of the village, the coffee house constitutes a cohesive social system which exerts strong control over its members. This control in turn, implemented through the informal and formal structure, is extended over the entire village system.By controlling its members the coffee‐house group indirectly exerts control over the other important informal groups of the village, the family, the groups of women, and the groups of children. In order to preserve or raise his status in the coffee‐house group, the male adult expects his family to behave in a manner approved by his group. Women and children behave in this manner to protect the status of the father, being aware of his attachment to it.Finally, the coffee‐house group exerts control over the formal structure of the village by influencing decisions made by formal organizations, particularly the village government, and possibly by influencing election of leaders of these organizations.RésuméLe »Café« Et La Structure Sociale Du Village GrecLe but de cette étude était l'analyse, en premier lieu, de la position du café dans la structure sociale du village et, en second lieu, de la fonction de cette position comme partie intégrante de l'organisation sociale du village.

SummaryIndustrialization and Changes Within the FamilyThe phenomenon of industrialization and urbanization has had a profound impact on the social structure of the family in the western world. The purpose of the present comparative study is to delineate crucial changes within the family under the influence of industrialization. The data analyzed stem from a cross‐national study conducted in the years of 1959 and 1960 in Great Britain, Italy, Western Germany and the USA. They were collected by means of sample surveys and personal interviewing in connection with a standardized questionnaire, the questions of which were largely structured. The cross‐national data support Burgess' central thesis that the family is in transition from an institution to a companionship, i.e., from the traditional patriarchal type of family to a more equalitarian partnership type of family. Furthermore, the empirical data show that this shift is strongly associated with the processes of industrialization: the more industrialized a society, the more pronounced the trend toward an egalitarian, companionship form of a family. The results for Germany indicate that patriarchalism survives primarily in the upper classes. The differences between rural and urban family patterns diminish with increasing industrialization and urbanization. While in less industrialized societies the integration of the rural family into urban society lags behind, existing rural‐urban differences are differences in degree rather than in kind. Total integration is a question of time. The cross‐national results tend to support Ogburn's cultural lag theory, according to which various segments of society and culture are not changing at the same rate.RésuméINDUSTRIALISATION ET MODIFICATIONS DES STRUCTURES FAMILIALESL'industrialisation et l'urbanisation ont provoqué des mutations profondes dans la structure socio‐psychologique et dans les relations internes de la famille occidentale.

SummaryValues in European Agricultural PoliciesIn this article we have tried to clarify some of the background of agricultural policies. By means of four values in several combinations it is possible to typify a number of ideal types of agricultural policy. The micro‐economic value strives after a more or less advanced structural policy aimed at promoting conditions for the sound organization of agricultural holdings. The macro‐economic value strives after a policy of promoting the optimal contribution of agriculture to the national product. The macro‐social value finds its expression in the striving after a maintenance of a numerically strong group of farmers who are looked upon as defenders of a valuable and of a more or less traditional way of life. The micro‐social value finds its expression in a striving after a fair income for the farmer. These values have been further analysed.Conservative agricultural policy emphasizes the macro‐social value primarily; welfare‐state policy accents the micro‐economic value in the first place; liberal agricultural policy accents the macro‐economic value; the micro‐economic value may be accepted by each of the above mentioned policies; the progressive agricultural policy rejects the macro‐social value but accepts the three others.RésuméL'Influence Des Changements En Agriculture Dans La Vie PolitiquePar cet exposé, nous essaierons de clarifier quelques uns des fondements des politiques agricoles.
