SUMMARYThis article examines empirically some assertions of Pahl's contribution entitled ‘The Rural‐Urban Continuum’, a main paper delivered at the meeting of the Fifth Congress of the European Society for Rural Sociology in Dublin, Ireland, August, 1966.Specifically, the present paper seeks to test Pahl's thesis that no fundamental sociological differences exist between rural and urban. An attempt is made to demonstrate that the pervasive use of the rural‐urban variable in sociological research has generated a need for testing hypotheses about rural‐urban differences within comparable cross‐cultural contexts. To illustrate this point, it is shown that while some specific rural‐urban differences have disappeared, relevant and sociologically significant differences in other areas of human behaviour seemingly persist.A comparison of rural and urban fertility patterns supports the thesis of Taylor and Jones that contemporary America displays many characteristics of an urbanised social organisation which is continuing its influence over American family life. The West German fertility data, however, fail to support the urbanisation thesis for the West German society. Current differences in reproductive behaviour are still marked and crucial. An analysis of family data from four Western nations demonstrated that the extent of rural‐urban differences with respect to family authority patterns varies inversely with the degree to which that society is industrialised. These cross‐cultural findings support the thesis that the less Western societies are developed economically, the greater is the extent of rural‐urban differences with respect to family structure. A set of economic, social, and attitudinal data gathered in West Germany provides further evidence in support of the thesis that rural‐urban differences, while diminishing, are still crucial in some areas of human conduct. In the light of this cross‐cultural evidence, Pahl's assertion of no fundamental sociological differences between rural and urban behaviour patterns must be refuted. differences between rural and urban behaviour patterns must be refuted.Pahl's framework of the ‘national‐local system’ is evaluated in terms of its utility to deal with problems of social change, i.e., problems which rural and urban sociologists will be expected to handle in the future. It appears to illuminate many facets of non‐Western village communities and other transitional social structures. It also offers plausible interpretations of rural‐urban discontinuities in Western industrial societies.

SUMMARYIt is argued that ‘rural’ andgemeinschaftshould not be used as interchangeable terms and there are a number of overlapping continua between ‘rural’ and ‘urban’, variously defined. Lupri shows a statistical correlation related to settlement size but does not demonstrate the sociological significance of this. The contention that rural‐urban differences in W. Germany or U.S.A. are ‘crucial’ is questioned: there appears to be considerable ambiguity in his interpretation of his own work and also of other literature in the U.S.A.Further thoughts on this topic are considered in relation to the economic base and level of technology: the problem of scale and the occupational continuum are considered to be closely tied to the economic substructure. A recent attempt to measure urbanization is seen as a way of making the continuum an operational concept. However, recent criticisms of the reification of concepts are well taken and emphasis is still put on the relationships between the small‐scale and the large‐scale as an important field of study.RÉSUMÉL'auteur montre que les termes «rural» et «gemeinschaft» ne devraient pas être considérés comme interchangeables et qu'il existe un grand nombre de continua «rural‐urbain» se chevauchant, très diversement définis.

SUMMARYDichotomous constructions of human society have by now become traditional. The continuum hypothesis which differentiates societies based on structural levels has replaced the notion of a dichotomy. An attempt is made to examine the applicability of rural‐urban continuum in the Indian context. A number of criticisms already levelled against the continuum hypothesis are further reinforced through this examination. It is argued that the unilinear dependence on quantitative or qualitative factors for categorizing communities into rural or urban is unrewarding. A trichotomous typology, which is capable of meeting several of the criticisms against the continuum, is suggested. In order to understand the change of society from one type to another, the ‘core institutional order’ of the society needs to be located. It is maintained that the core institutional order differs from society to society. A society could be viewed as changed and moving from one type to another when its core institutional order changes.RÉSUMÉLes schémas dichotomiques de la société humaine sont maintenant devenus traditionnels.

SUMMARYA series of research studies started in 1961, by which the phenomena related to the liberation and the occupation of farm holdings have been studied. This has induced the authors to establish a predictive model of these phenomena. This model, on the one hand, takes into account the French policy of intervention in the field of the structure of farm holdings, and, on the other, the factors of mortality, total or partial retirement, desired increases in land holdings, mobility within the agricultural profession, and departure from the profession.

SUMMARYThe method of Lévesque et al., designed for the prediction of the development of supply and demand of land, is in the main practical and correct, but it can only be used for the short term. For an insight of long‐term developments, which is of essential significance for the design of structural agricultural policies, the method is insufficient. The findings of economists should be added to it. An attempt can be made to establish, with the use of farm‐models, which farm‐types and farm‐sizes in a certain region will be desirable and necessary, taking economic, social and technological developments into account.
