SummaryLAND OWNERSHIP IN DENSELY POPULATED AND INDUSTRIALIZED COUNTRIESThe relationships between man and land are social phenomena. That means that man‐land relationships are related to society as a whole, to its culture, its structure and its function. In certain periods of history certain laws, rules or institutions ‐ like the phenomena of leasehold ‐ come into existence and afterwards they often continue to exist. The main issue discussed is whether in modern, industrialized and densely populated countries (exemplified by the Netherlands) property in land is still in accordance with the real needs and functions of society. To tackle the problem the author investigates the functions of land in the nineteenth century in relation to its functions in present‐day society.Whereas in the nineteenth century private property seemed to be the most appropiate form of land ownership, the present‐day situation shows an ‘erosion of private property rights’, although private ownership is still accepted everywhere in non‐communist Europe. Re‐allocation has become very important from an economic point of view (mechanisation), and the owner can also be expropiated for planning and on purposes. Furthermore local government authorities interfere with fixed rents for land. It is stated, however, that a really rational system consisting of large, well‐shaped parcels of land, fitted for large‐scale mechanized agriculture now and in the future, would be only possible when the land is in sole ownership. Other reasons for discussing land as property are that it is more profitable to rent land nowadays, and that it has lost much of its former psychological value and status.Individual property rights are at present strongly restricted by physical planning, for instance for housing, industrial use, road construction, agricultural and recreational purposes or for the protection of nature. With few exceptions all land for non‐agricultural purposes in the Netherlands becomes, at least temporarily, government property, which is necessary for a balanced economic policy and planning. It is concluded that private property in land has weakened as a system and that it does not work efficiently in densely populated, industrialized countries. It tends to become a cultural lag, and to an important extent it is already disfunctional.RésuméLes relations entre l'homme et le sol constituent un phénomème social.

SummaryNUTRITION AND SOCIOLOGYDestined for readers who are for the greater part physicians specializing in nutrition, this article attempts to make them sensitive for the uses of sociology in relation to nutrition. It tends at the same time to make people conscious of the sociological consequences of the work of nutritionists and to warn the latter against certain cliches, certain models which are too simple, which are often considered as truisms. It must indicate a willingness to establish an interdisciplinary dialogue that alone can allow the solution of concrete problems which never depend on one single discipline, on the competence of one specialist.

SummaryTHE PEASANT WORLD IN FRENCH SOCIETYThis article, in an age in which the ‘peasant’ is considered by many people as an archaic species about to disappear, attempts to describe what characterized this social type and its place in French society. That the peasants appear in it as a group that often resists the so‐called ‘industrial’ society, hard to integrate in the French ‐ and not only French ‐ global society as a whole is not enough. An attempt is made to understand why this is so.The reactions received after publication of this article have underlined the wall of incomprehension that has been established between these two ‘societies’: the representatives of the global society considering the description of the peasant people too strict, the non‐conformism of the peasants to the global society being perceived as an unpardonable blemish, while the advocates of the latter recognize themselves in it and display a tendency to use it as a basic image of a peasant consciousness. These opposite reactions can be considered as a justification ex post of the author's attempt.

SummaryTHREE PORTRAITSWhile the former article dealt with the description of the general traits of a peasant world in the midst of the French global society, these three portraits focus on the particular aspects of three different rural types. The links with their different social statuses, the outputs to which everyone is dedicated, the geographical and social environment emphasize the variety in attitudes of the people who constitute a French rural society in which traditional peasant ways combine with the acculturation to the global society in various degrees and modalities.

SummaryTRENDS AND PERSPECTIVES OF FRENCH RURAL SOCIOLOGY (1960–1970)From 1960 to 1970 research on rural sociology has principally dealt with the social problems posed by the farmers. Thevillagehas retained attention, either as a social system formed by hierarchic elements, or as a basic Dévelopment unity, marked by a growing interdependence between functions and groups beyond the village itself. Themobilityof farmers has been studied through the conceptual frames of rural exodus, geographical migration, change of profession or cultural change.Rural workhas been analysed because of its peculiarity in industrialized societies; stricdy regulated by multiple professional organizations, it still causes an attitude of permanent quasi‐revolt.Technical or economic innovationhas been another topic of research; its ubiquity is such that the whole of rural society is transformed. Besides, agriculture is the professional sector in which innovations most easily take on new forms, especially co‐operatives.Agricultural policyinvites sociological attention; it is everywhere a compromise between economic or social objectives of governments and the restrictions connected with work on the land. This policy is made still more difficult by the fact that changes which occurred in agriculture modify the entire global society while at the same time raising opposition against the forms adopted by the industrialized part of the society. In these complex situations, research‐workers have tried to create instruments to disclose the phases of the future evolution of the farmers and have developed methods of prevision.

SummarySOCIOLOGIA RURALIS ON THE BALANCEIn this paper, an attempt has been made to evaluate the contents of volumes I to X ofSociologia Ruralis(1960–1970), with the understanding that only the (75) English written papers are being reviewed. The main starting points have been derived from Article 4 of the Constitution of the European Society for Rural Sociology. After having proposed a number of critical remarks on the subjects that have been dealt with in the papers concerned, a tentative evaluation has been made of the practical, theoretical, and methodological relevance of these papers. In the final section, some ideas are suggested which might be useful in order to remove several shortcomings brought to light in the previous sections.

SummarySTATUS QUO AND SOCIAL CHANGEThis article sets out to analyse the contents of the papers contributed between 1960 and 1970 to Sociologia Ruralis (SR) by German authors (with the exclusion of Swiss and Austrian). It has attempted to deduct and order sociologically relevant hypotheses from the material, starting out from the difference between rural and urban. It can be shown that the gap between basic and applied research which exists in Western Germany also comes to the fore in SR: it is first and foremost a medium for rural sociologists attached to universities, while their colleagues who do not work in universities have withdrawn almost entirely from the discussion. It can also be shown that in general the rural‐urban continuum is rejected. All attempts to comprehend multidimensional and complex changes in the structure and function of rural areas in terms of unidimensional concepts have turned out to be inadmissible simplifications. The distinctions between city and country are disappearing; new social forms appear which combine elements from both social spheres. The development is leading to new special sociologies which would deal with specific problems of the region, of economic and social integration, of land use and the agricultural economy. With the development of social technologies, rural sociology can contribute to an adequate formulation of policy. However, the uncertain boundary between valuation and value‐freedom obliges the rural sociologist to reflect at all times on the consequences of his labour. The theoretical concepts which come to the fore ‐ in the interdisciplinary and inter‐cultural appoaches ‐ have not yet been subject to empirical research by German rural sociology.RésuméSTATU QUO ET CHANGEMENT SOCIALCet article a pour objet l'analyse des articles d'auteurs allemands* parus entre 1960 et 1970, dans Sociologia Ruralis.
