SummarySOME THEORBTICAL CONSIDERATIONS IN THE STUDY OF SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT IN THE THIRD WORLDThe object of this paper is to suggest a theoretical approach to the study of social development in developing countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America. Social development is regarded here as a radical transformation of economy and society, and as something which must be assessed in primarily human terms. After a critical examination of some conventional theories of modernization and social change, the paper goes on to suggest that a fruitful line of research is to view development as fundamental structural change. This would involve examination of social structural features in a society which encourage or hinder social development. Finally, specific empirical research is to be directed to identify agents as well as obstacles to social development.RésuméL'ÉTUDE DU DÉVELOPPEMENT DANS LE TIERS‐MONDE QUELQUES CONSIDéRATIONS THÉORIQUESCet article a pour objet de proposer une approche théorique du développement en Asie, Afrique et Amérique Latine. Le développement doit êre considéré comme une transformation radicale du systéme économique de la société, comme un processus dont l'évaluation doit se faire essentiellement en termes sociaux. Aprés un examen critique de quelques théories classiques de la modernisation et du changement social, l'auteur suggére une piste de recherches, beaucoup plus fructueuse que les précédentes: le développement devrait être considéré comme un changement fondamental de structures. SummaryTHE FUTURE OF RURAL SOCIOLOGYRural sociology is stagnating because it has been focusing too uncritically on the adaptation of rural sub‐systems to the main society and because it seems unable to relate its subject anew to the global society. An outline of a new, comprehensive, theoretical model is suggested, and in terms of this model the discipline is given new tasks. Emphasis is laid on the provision of feedback information, not in the first place to national governments, but to the agricultural population and the small rural territorial sub‐systems.RésuméL'avenir de la sociologie ruraleLa Sociologie Rurale stagne parce qu'elle s'est concentrée ‐ sans la contester suffisamment ‐ sur l'adaptation des soussystèmes ruraux à la société dominante et parce qu'elle semble incapable de définir de nouvelles relations entre son objet et la société globale. Has it set up some unfathomed psychosis deep down in the Celtic psyche which fills the heart of the Gael with an insatiable restlessness, a cosmic wanderlust, a sort of demi‐urge that goads him to the waiting ship and far‐distant shore?”SummaryON THE CAUSES OF IRISH EMIGRATIONIn this paper several generally accepted reasons for Irish emigration (population density, poor marriage prospects for females and internal family pressures) will be rejected. Today's emigration has its own structure and its own contemporary causes. It is argued that emigrating is not any longer final in character, but can better be described as migrant labour. On the basis of a statistical analysis and the results of sociological fieldwork in a rural trade centre in S. W. Ireland it is shown that economic factors and the standard motive of adventure are most important in explaining why the Irish emigrate nowadays. The relation between these two types of factors is one between necessary and sufficient conditions.RésuméCet article réfute plusieurs des causes généralement acceptées de l'émigration irlandaise (densité démographique, espérance de mariage faible pour les jeunes filles et pressions familiales). L'émigration actuelle a ses propres structures et ses causes spkcifiques. L'auteur dtmontre que l'émigration ne présente plus un caractère définitif mais constitue une migration temporaire de travail. Des analyses statistiques et une recherche sociologique menée dam une ville située dans une zone rurale du sud‐ouest de l'Irlande, ont montré que les facteurs économiques et l'aspiration classique è l'aventure constituent des facteurs trés importants des migrations irlandaises actuelles. La relation entre ces deux types de motivations est une entre conditions ntcessaires et suffisantes de la migration.LES CA

SummaryMEASURING THE STANDARD OF LIVING OF SELF‐EMPLOYED FARMERS SOME RESULTS FROM A DANISH STUDY.The paper analyses some differences in the material standard of living for groups of Danish self‐employed farmers, and the factors influencing these differences.As most of the traditional measures of standard of living are difficult to use in a meaningful way, in this survey a new measure has been constructed, based on information about the actual possession of a number of consumer durables amongst a representative sample of 1.418 Danish farmers in 1969.The measure is used to test some hypotheses about the relationships between the size of holding, the age of the farmer, his education, his work outside his farm, and his investments in the farm. It is concluded that the constructed measure implies some limitations, but that some of the most serious problems of the traditional measures are avoided.RésuméLE NIVEAU DE VIE DES PROPRIÉTAIRES EXPLOITANTS QUELQUES RÉSULTATS D'UNE ÉTUDE DANOISECet article analyse les Wifféences de niveau de vie selon les cattgories de propriétaires exploitants et les facteurs responsables de cette diversitk.La plupart des méthodes traditionnelles d'évaluation du niveau de vie étant d'utilisation aléatoire, les auteurs en ont élaborC une nouvelle, fondée sur la répartition d'un certain nombre de biens durables dans un échantillon de 1458 agriculteurs danois en 1969.Cette méthode est utilisée pour tester quelques hypothéses con cernant la relation entre le niveau de vie et la dimension de l'exploitation, l'êge et le niveau d'instruction de l'agriculteur, une éventuelle profession extérieure et les investissements réalisés. Les auteurs concluent que la méthode élaborée présente certaines ljmites mais qu'elle évite la plupart des problèmes importants posés
