ABSTRACTThe last rural crisis (1975–1980) in Poland, much deeper than previous ones, provoked a kind of revolution. Agreements signed by representatives of the Party and of the striking workers facilitated the emergence of the first independent agricultural trade union in People's Poland, called “Solidarity”, although its legal and ideological obstacles were much greater than in the case of the workers' trade union “Solidarity”. The farmers' trade union movement had a pragmatic and realistic programme which was a fair expression of the professional and social interests of the farmers and all the rural population. Engels' opinion that peasants would spontaneously create collective forms of agricultural production because of the threat of the big landed estates was not confirmed in Poland. However, faced with the arbitrary constraints imposed by the Administration, the peasants established a trade union for their own self defence.RÉSUMÉLa dernière crise agricole (1975–1980) plus profonde que les précédentes a provoqué une sorte de révolution.
ABSTRACTThe paper examines the historical development of a sexual division of labour in the farm household in south‐west England. The main focus is upon the transformation of women's work roles in the area studied from being primarily concerned with agriculture to being concentrated within the domestic domain. Women's contemporary domestic labour on the farm is of two sorts: on behalf of the family(reproductivelabour) and for tourists(productivelabour) accommodated within the house.
In particular, the ambivalent processes and consequences of farm modernization are analyzed from the perspective of the women concerned Farm innovations here appear as necessary attempts to assure the survival of peasant producers rather than an expression of dynamic and progesssive farm management. Most farmers' wives feel that their working hours have been extended and many work operations intensified. This is exemplified by the mechanization of their holdings. Furthermore, the effects of increasing use of chemicals in agriculture are discussed from the woman's angle. Doubts about the ecological consequences of modern farming are seen by them as justified, more than half of them admitted that they treat products for home consumption differently from products for sale. Though modernization of holdings calls for additional work, energy and sacrifice, eighty per cent of the women will continue to farm under all circumstances.

Celles‐ci se diversifient non seulement scion leurs types d'habitat, mais aussi scion leur mode d'inscrtion et d'utilisation du groupe social local.ABSTRACTThe increasing importance of the residential function of rural zones, particularly in areas close to the cities, is a fact which is generally recognized. This article is an attempt to contribute to the study of this phenomenon, by asking if this movement has the social uniformity which it is often supposed to have. Starting from two types of spaces and from at least two modes of urbanization, this paper's hypothesis is that the “rurbanization” movement differs according to population categories. These arc not only diversified by housing‐types, but also by the ways they are integrated into local social groups and the ways they use these groups.KURZFASSUNGDie wachsende Bedeutung ländlicher Gebicte als Siedlungsraum, vor allem in den Stadt‐umlandregionen, ist cine allgemein zu bcobachtende Tatsachc.
ABSTRACTThis paper is a theoretical critique and empirical examination of the Mann‐Dickinson thesis concerning obstacles to capitalist development in agriculture. Mann and Dickinson contend that the noncoincidence of labor time and production time in the production process of certain agricultural commodities poses, along with perishability, an impediment to capitalist penetration. Neither of these characteristics is found to actually impede the development of capitalism in U.S. agriculture. The labor/production time hypothesis is given greater consideration as it has apparent theoretical primacy in the Mann and Dickinson argument. The thesis is criticized on several theoretical points. The empirical refutation consists of analysis of data concerning the variance of total monthly labor and the use of hired labor. Eight commodities and/or commodity groups arc analyzed for the period 1944–1974. The paper concludes that the labor/production time thesis is not supported by the evidence and that research on the capitalist penetration of agriculture must not be restricted to the view that capitalism penetrates simple commodity production only in the form of the hired labor relation.RÉSUMÉCet article constitue une critique théorique et une discussion cmpirique de la thèse de Mann‐Dickinson à propos des obstacles au développement du capitalisme dans l'agriculture.

ABSTRACTAs an alternative to conventional project evaluation, which does not meet the challenge of multiple inputs in integrated rural development, it is proposed to survey multiple project impact at the community level by means of a before‐and‐after informant survey. Multiple regression is used to control on important background factors as well as the initial level of the criterion variable.
