SummaryRELATIVE PREDICTABILITY OF FIVE INDICES OF ADOPTION OF RECOMMENDED FARM PRACTICES: The central concern of this study was to compare five indices of adoption of recommended farm practices in terms of their capacities to predict variations in variables theoretically expected and empirically established to be related to adoption. Of the five indices of adoption, three were conventional indices widely used by rural sociologists in measuring the adoption behaviour of farmers. The first index was comparatively crude ‐ the per cent of applicable practices adopted. The other was an improvement over the first in that the years of use of the adopted applicable practices were taken into consideration. The third index involved a categorization of farmers into five groups in terms of the degree to which each of them was relatively earlier to adopt new ideas than other members of his social system.Besides these three indices, two adoption scales were constructed with the use of trace line analysis and Guttman's scalogram analysis, respectively. The predictive utility of each of these five indices was measured by computing Gutman's coefficient of predictive utility for each of the twenty‐one variables known to be related to measures of adoption.

SummaryTHE CULTIVATOR IN THE COLLECTIVE FARM ‐ SOCIO‐ECONOMIC CHARACTERISTICS AND PROBLEMS: This article analyses, firstly, the economic motives within collectivization and the close inter‐relationship between the main cooperative enterprise and the accessory private holdings. The relative weight of the main and auxiliary enterprises is completely opposite to that in Western Europe. Both are complementary, they exist only in full symbiosis. Therefore, it is difficult to calculate the efficiency of one isolated part only. The income of the collective peasant is likewise composed of co‐operatively and individually earned parts, similar to a system of communicating tubes. Changes in one component influence the whole system. The income and its components reflect the social features of the co‐operative peasant: he is at the same time partially a working member of the co‐operative, an independent smallholder and a landowner. He represents a type of cultivator contemporary to the peasant of Western Europe, the commercial farmer of North America, the share‐cropper of Southern Asia, the plantation worker, and others. Underemployment, emigration of the young and a high proportion of elderly people are some of the social problems of farming co‐operatives in communist countries. The new economic system improves the material position of the farming sector and of the collective peasants, and induces members to control their enterprise. Real co‐operative democracy, hitherto absent, is possible because of changed conditions, while it is necessary for further material progress. The sequence of the phases of agrarian reform in Soviet Russia is discussed. The phase of structural transformation was extended by the devastating effects of World War II. Now, production is promoted through the input of new production means. At the same time, the existing structure and its social problems are under critical research and review.Collective farms in Soviet Russia were not formed voluntarily. In spite of that, they represent a form of co‐operation. In the 39 years since their foundation human and physical pre‐conditions for democratization have been created. The success of the new economic system is dependent on the development of internal democracy.

SummaryFARMERS' EVALUATIONS OF OCCUPATIONAL PRESTIGE IN SOUTHERN GERMANY: As part of a research study into the evaluation of the agricultural graduate, a status occupation test with eight comparable occupations was constructed. The average values of position of the given occupations do not spread continuously over the whole, theoretically possible field from one to eight, but there are three accumulations between the average values of position 2.91 (senior county official) and 5.94 (primary school teacher). Thus, farmers' conceptions of the classification of the occupations by prestige are very different. None of the occupations was attributed a top‐position by a large majority of the studied sample.Senior county official (Landrat), physician and senior judge in a county court predominate in the upper third of the scale. Director of extension (Landwirtschaftsrat) and clergyman are in the middle group. Lawyer, architect and primary school teacher were placed generally in the lowest third of the ladder. The sequence of the social positions is primarily associated with the degree of education: occupations with university background rank before non‐academic ones. Within this order, people obviously differentiate according to the degree of responsibility and influence. A knowledge of the graduation of values of definite characteristics could only be gathered from the persons interviewed. Values' criteria, however, were not raised in this study.A breakdown of the average positions in order of priority has been made by categories of farmers. The result was that size of farms and taxable value, graduation from farm institute, external apprenticeship or external work, and the age of the interviewee result in significant changes in the classification of the eight given occupations.

SummaryCATHOLIC PRIESTS AND THE ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT OP THE FRENCH COUNTRYSIDE: Research among 1,200 Roman Catholic priests has been concerned with their attitudes regarding actual developments in the French countryside including questions on economic change. The principal themes of this investigation were the effects of technological progress, the establishment of industries, the decrease in the population working in agriculture, emigration to urban areas, family enterprise, cooperation, professional organization, and credit. It appears that the clergy in rural parishes have more positive attitudes towards change than is generally supposed. This openness is the least with regard to family life, and strongest concerning economic rationality. Clear differences exist in attitudes between the generations of priests in relation to the majority of the topics.
