The rare‐earth elements (REE) and yttrium have been determined in 37 international rock and mineral reference materials. Samples were prepared using conventional rock‐dissolution techniques, and the REE and yttrium were separated from the other constituents using cation‐exchange chromatography. The REE (La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Dy, Ho, Er, Yb, Lu) and yttrium were determined simultaneously by inductively coupled plasma‐atomic emission spectrometry (ICP‐AES). Results for four well‐characterised USGS standard rocks agree favourably with “recommended” values and with REE determinations made previously by workers using ICP‐AES, isotope dilution mass spectrometry, instrumental neutron activaton analysis and X‐ray fluorescence spectrometry.Les éléments de terres rares (TR) et yttrium ont été dosés dans 37 échantillons internationaux de réféence. A series of five Belgian sedimentary rock reference samples (shale AWI‐1, schist SBO‐1, psammite PRI‐1, limestone CCH‐1 and dolomite DWA‐1) have been prepared for collaborative studies on their chemical composition. Tables of results compiled from 18 laboratories are presented for about 60 major, minor and trace elements. These data are summarized into means, associated standard deviations, medians and ranges. Total carbon and inorganic carbon were determined by coulometric titration for 18 National Bureau of Standards (NBS) Standard Reference Material (SRM) and 4 Canadian Certified Reference Project Standards (CCRMP). A wide range of carbon contents was represented in the samples, which included biological, geological, and environmental materials. The analytical data produced helps fill gaps in the available literature for total and inorganic carbon values.

Ag, Cd, Ti and Mo are extracted from 3M HCI and 0.03M I as ion associates with trioctylphosphine oxide into MIBK. Measurement of the organic extract by GFAAS enables a determination down to 0.02 ppm of Cd, 0.2 ppm of Ag, Mo and Tl. Six roches standards de I'USGS : GXR‐1 à GXR‐6 ont été analysées par activation neutronique instrumentale (INAA) pour le dosage de 17 éléments traces et par fluorescence X (XRF) pour les autres éléments difficiles à doser par activation neutronique. Les travaux précédemment publiés par Gladney et al. ont été pris comme référence en particulier les valeurs recommandées (R.V.) qui sont généralement en bon accord avec nos résultats. The gold content of sixty geochemical reference samples has been determined by atomic absorption spectrometry using a graphite furnace atomizer after digestion of sample with aqua regia and extraction of gold as chloride by methylisobutylketone. Elemental concentration data on up to 73 individual constituents in BIR‐1, DNC‐1, and W‐2 have been collected from 94 journal articles and technical reports. These data are summarized in consensus (mean) values with uncertainties expressed as one standard deviation.
