摘要:
The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate how some aspects of agrimonetary system of the Common Agricultural Policy may be analysed using spatial equilibrium diagrams, modified to include foreign exchange sectors. The model analyses the effects of monetary compensatory amounts on intra‐Community trade. The results are: first, when the intervention price is below the market price, both the importing and the exporting country gain in social welfare; and second, when the intervention price is effective, only the importing country gains. In each case the cost of the MCA's exceeds these welfare gains. From a budgetary viewpoint there is a trade‐off between the cost of intervention buying and the cost of the trade subs

摘要:
Official statistics do not reveal the nature of the contribution which farmers' wives make to the farm labour force. On the basis of a pilot study, three roles for women on farms were identified. Main distinguishing features were division of labour between husband and wife, frequency of manual work, responsibility for farm enterprises, participation in formal organisations and approach to housework. Home‐centred farm housewives only work on the farm occasionally, working farmwives assist their husbands regularly while women farmers threaten male status by doing “man's” work. Reasons for women playing one role rather than another are discussed. Trends in agriculture suggest that the farmer's wife's contribution to the farm business will become still more significant in future.“The concept of ‘the farmer and his wife’ so often used by agricultural economics is far from having universal validity” (Ash

摘要:
An estimate is made of the benefits resulting from the implementation of a proposed fungicide advisory programme for Kent wheat farmers. The programme has a value by providing information which enables improved spraying decisions to be made by farmers. The expected annual value for Kent is found to be £106,000.A closer examination is made of both the returns and costs of one component of the scheme, viz, the training of farmers to recognise the disease (caused by Septoria spp.) in their fields. An average benefit/cost ratio of 8/1 is calculated to result from the provision of farmer training programmes. However, if the decision by farmers to attend courses is made upon the criteria of expected gain to themselves, then initial courses would have a much higher benefit/cost ratio. There would be diminishing returns to additional courses, but only those Kentish wheat growers with the smallest areas of crop would lack the financial incentive to attend

摘要:
This paper discusses approaches to the problem of pest control decision making. A farmer's pest control decisions are shown to depend on his subjective perception of the pest hazard, the controls he recognises as available to him, his subjective estimate of their net effect, and his individual decision rule or goal. A case study is discussed in which a decision model is used to compare objective pest observation with subjective perceptions of sugar beet growers. Applications of such a model for improving pest control decisions are suggested.

摘要:
Data for Scotland are used to show how some farm types are becoming locationally more dispersed while others become more localised in those regions with which they have a traditional association. The process leading to a more specialised regional farm type structure is complex and varies in character from region to region. The differential movement into and out of the production of certain products, particularly beef, lies at the centre of the process. The regional specialisation of production has implications for the economic stability of farm economies and the environment.

摘要:
This paper examines the recent decision of the UK authorities to extend co‐operative organisation by the creation of second‐tier co‐operatives. It does this in the light of the development of second‐ and third‐tier co‐operatives elsewhere in the EEC and compares their characteristics with those of the proposed British institutions. The overall conclusion is that the measures proposed for the promotion of supra‐co‐operative organisation in the UK are likely to be insufficient, of themselves, to produce the advantages which such organisation has encouraged on the Continent of Europe but that they will begin the process of attitude change on the part of co‐operative managers and farmer‐members which is an essential prerequisite of a successful policy for second
