Substantial business resources are being dedicated to information technology (IT) but little is known about the effects of these investments on the performance of firms. This paper reports the results of a study of 33 manufacturing firms' investments in IT and their subsequent performance. The study analysed six years' data collected from three senior officers of each firm. Three types of IT investment were studied: strategic, informational and transactional. While firms which invested heavily in transactional IT were consistently better performers, this effect was not apparent with the other types of IT. These results have policy implications for the methods used to appraise future IT investments. Standard discounted cashflow methods are not suited to all types of IT investments. This article suggests different approaches to IT appraisal for different types of IT investment.

This paper provides information on auditors' opinions in Australia in the period 1980‐1989. Issues which are reviewed include the frequency with which different opinions are issued, the types of opinions which are issued by the different audit firms and the circumstances on which the financial statements have drawn qualification. Between 15% and 20% of the financial statements were found to draw qualification, with very few of these qualifications being in the more serious forms of the adverse opinion or the disclaimer. This paper reviews recent research on the stockmarket's perception of the information provided in the annual corporate accounting report to shareholders. Although accounting research is still in its infancy, some conclusions are clear. There is solid evidence that sharemarkets pay attention to the announcement of accounting net income and that prices react favourably to income increases and unfavourably to income decreases. Further, there is some evidence describing the way that income information is translated into price. Recent studies show that although earnings appear to be a poor summary of the events affecting the firm over the year, it is a good summary information variable over a longer (10‐year) horizon. This paper proposes that traditional cost‐based management accounting systems (MAS) are inappropriate for controlling a manufacturing organisation's performance in cases where non‐cost factors are important aspects of the firm's competitive strategy. Manufacturing organisations in Australia are under increasing pressure to increase their competitiveness. This can be achieved by giving the manufacturing function strategic status in the organisation and by designing the MAS to support those strategies directly. The MAS should measure operational performance, control investment and report in terms of the factors which determine the organisation's competitive advantage, whether they be high product quality, manufacturing flexibility, low cost or other influences.
