摘要:
ABSTRACT:This Paper the existing literature on optimal capital utilisation and shiftwork patterns by arguing that labour is not the only input to exhibit a price which varies over the time of day week or year Indeed in certain situations as in the w e of capital intensive industries which are heavy consumers of electricity labour costs may not even be the most important consideration The introduction of a second varying input price can completely alter the optimal operating times of production units Once this extension has been adopted it is a fairly easy final step to demonstrate that some firms face a strong inducement to develop technologies which allow them to use their capital and labour independently This type of technological change has become commonplace in recent years but largely unexplained by the existing literature These developments have important implications for the organisation of work patterns and the flexible use of the labour input

摘要:
ABSTRACT:This paper considers the claim thatexplicitprofit sharing reduces the marginal cost of labour This is contrasted with the view thatimplicitprofit sharing occurs through wage bargaining Using a microeconomic data set from the UK we find no evidence that the introduction of profit sharing reduces base wages and hence the marginal cost of labour However firm profitability is found to have a positive effect on wages which supports the hypothesis of implicit profit sharing through wage bargaining These findings suggest that it is hard to justify the favourable tax treatment of profit related pay found in the UK

摘要:
ABSTRACT:This paper investigates the role of national labour market characteristics for the chances of successful transition to EMU in Europe as well as for its viability The conclusions are rather pessimistic Although overlooked by the Maastricht Treaty the need for real convergence (I e convergence of real macroeconomic variables like unemployment) is emphasized as a major condition for success However current labour market characteristics in the EC make it quite unlikely that this condition will be fulfilled We show that the implementation of the Maastricht programme might turn into an obstacle to monetary unification

摘要:
ABSTRACT:The paper analyses the wage bargaining process between an entrepreneur and his workforce when delays in agreement intrinsically reduce the amount of returns to be shared It is shown that the outside options of the workforce and the entrepreneur can be a systematic determinant of their bargaining power in contrast to what the Rubinstein (1982) model predicts The basic model is extended to analyse: (i) bargaining under multiple unionism; (ii) the‐ possible relationship between bargaining and efficiency wages; and (iii) under investment in workforce trainin

摘要:
ABSTRACT:The substantial failure of many public programmes intended to increase job opportunities of youth via better education and training has been ascribed mainly to quantitative factors like mismatching or insufficient funds This paper takes a different perspective and concentrates on qualitative aspects It proposes a simple analytical scheme designed to study the consequences of low quality education on the performance of the policy created educational organisations under asymmetric information The model considers two types of schools (high qualityHand low qualityB) and asks whether there is any room left for the low quality one It is found that an adverse selection process may start within the pool of applicants to schoolBeven under very favourable demand conditions and that any worsening of these conditions lowers the equilibrium average quality of typeBgraduates Eventually the market for typeBcertificates may disappear
