Madame Bovaryabounds in references to food, to its production and exchange as well as its consumption. These references appear to be quite casual, an aspect of Flaubert's realistic portrayal of daily life. But analysis reveals that food plays a vital role in the novel in four distinct ways: as an environmental factor, as a social indicator, as a means of characterization and as a source of imagery. So the allusions to food prove an intrinsic part of the novel's total poetic pattern, and their use illustrates essential facets of Flaubert's narrative art.

This paper investigates the claim made by recent critics that there is a strong non‐figurative element in Flaubert's work. the introduction (pp. 66–72) challenges the view of Realism proposed by Barthes, suggesting that the mimetic element should be regarded as an integral part of the semiotic system which the novel constitutes. the next section (pp. 72–77) examines Flaubertian description which, it has often been felt, has a disruptive effect; it is argued that both the symbolic and mimetic effects created by descriptive details may lessen the threat they pose to the balance of the novel. the next section (pp. 77–79) deals with plot, examining the effects of suppressing causal connectives and the various forms of disturbance ‐ at the level of the sentence, of the units of plot, and of theme ‐ brought about by Flaubert's deep‐seated compulsion to defer. the following section (pp. 80–83) analyzes the way Flaubert uses the cultural code and challenges the view that he has capitulated to the voice of endoxal wisdom; the role of the narrator is shown to be of key importance, both in spiking human stupidity and in setting up links between the fictional world and external reality. the conclusion (pp. 83–84) suggests thatMadame Bovarycannot be assimilated to either of the models put on display in the novel but successfully avoids the dange

Sophocles'Antigoneportrays religious, political and personal lines of development which make conflicting demands on the characters. Most later versions of the story emphasize one of these elements at the expense of the other two. Hölderlin's “translation,” which in fact should be considered an adaptation, is clearly the most significant of the religious interpretations. Brecht's politically oriented version is based on Hölderlin's play. While generally opposed to it, Brecht shares a certain conceptual tendency with his model: the emphasis on process rather than outcome. Anouilh's treatment of the private perspective is especially revealing in this context because of the contrast it presents to that of Brecht. Where Brecht depicts the effect of the individual's choices on the collective, Anouilh's interest lies with the implications of these choices for the individual himself. Through the comparative analysis of versions by Hölderlin, Brecht and Anouilh, one may understand the interrelated nature of the three major tendencies in interpretation of the Antigone ma
