AbstractA statewide study was done with five associate degree (ADN) and five baccalaureate degree (BSN) nursing programs in Georgia to examine the similarities and differences in curriculum based on a nationally used model. From this overall study, select content related to community/home health care was evaluated in the sample programs. Professional standards for community and home health care nursing practice, as well as other published literature on the topic, provided a basis to determine competence to practice. Data were collected through a taped telephone interview to all program chairpersons(N =10) and mailed questionnaires to faculty involved with all required courses(N=110). Content analyses of responses allowed for evaluation of frequency of these learning activities between ADN and BSN programs and among BSN programs in the areas of family, teaching, interdisciplinary collaboration, physical assessment, and leadership. Overall, the results indicated lack of conclusive data to support a distinct difference in these educational components between the ADN and BSN sample or among BSN programs. The study was intended to servce as a basis for home health care curriculum development in the future.

AbstractRecent legislative trends toward early hospital dismissal and cost containment have shifted the setting for health care from the hospital to the home. Consequently, community health nursing supervisors are becoming increasingly responsible both for coordinating care for sicker clients with fewer available resources, and for guiding staff nurses who provide high‐tech nursing skills in the home. This has resulted in new educational needs for these supervisors. To determine their educational needs and the barriers to implementing their roles, 160 community health nursing supervisors employed by community health nursing agencies in Michigan were surveyed. They reported educational needs related to labor relations, reimbursement procedures, fiscal management, marketing, and computer systems. Several types of educational experiences were found to influence their abilities to handle supervisory responsibilities, including enrollment in an educational program, highest level of education, and selected content areas taught in their formal educational programs. Nursing implications include using the research results to develop educational programs to meet the needs of community health nursing supervisors. AbstractThe practice of screening applicants for nursing home admission to determine whether less restrictive residential settings are possible is growing as states attempt to limit costs of Medicaid expenditures for long‐term care. AbstractThere is no definitive conclusion concerning the long‐debated issue of whether one international growth reference is sufficient for assessing the growth of all children regardless of racial background. Although nurses and health professionals in North America primarily use the National Health Centre for Health Statistics growth reference data to identify atypical growth, recognizing potential abnormalities in non‐Caucasians remains difficult. Historical ReprintIn 1923 when this article first appeared in the February issue of THE PUBLIC HEALTH NURSE it was fairly common for board members to go with a public health nurse on her rounds for a day. Many agencies today would welcome the same opportunity but unfortunately the volunteer board member has less time available for this inside look into an agency.
