This paper critically examines the evidence for the effectiveness of gentle teaching. In the last five years the literature in the field of gentle teaching has been dominated by case studies pointing to the success of gentle teaching and by experimental research which failed to show such an effect. More recently there have been criticisms of some of the early experimental evaluations and some limited evidence for effectiveness under controlled conditions. It seems that in some circumstances gentle teaching can be successful. Future research must address itself towards the analysis of these circumstances rather than global and relatively meaningless questions regarding overall effectiveness.

The very nature of Community Teams can make life particularly rewarding or particularly stressful. Invariably, not all teams function at their optimum level. This article explores one way of identifying the areas that need to be tackled in order to assist a team during difficult times. The article also examines how to monitor the outcome of any interventions or process of change.

A structured Assertiveness Training Course was run for seven people with a mental handicap and, where possible, their keyworkers. Evaluation of the Course was attempted both quantitively and qualitively but it was found that checklist measurements were unreliable. Subjective reports indicate that participants benefited in a variety of ways. The value of raising people's awareness of aspects of assertive behaviour is discussed.

This study reports the effect of relaxing music on the anxiety and agitation of a disturbed mentally handicapped woman. While the emphasis is on the short term effect of treatment, the study suggests that there may be other long term effects which in turn reflect an improved quality of life.

With increasing dispersion of residences for people with learning difficulties into smaller units in the community, the issue of support systems become more important. This paper describes a survey of 15 residential managers in Mansfield and Ashfield to discover their perceptions of need for support and shortfalls in provision. The areas considered most important by the managers were staff support and staff development. The areas where the biggest shortfalls were perceived were support for residents needs, staff support and staff development. There was considerable variation between units. On the whole, managers of units run by statutory agencies felt that the needs for support for their services were met more adequately than managers of units run by nonstatutory agencies. Some of the implications of these findings are discussed.
