摘要:
This article presents a number of instruments for assessing the presence or absence of dangers and safety precautions in the homes of people with mental handicaps, including those caring for their children at home, and the frequency of accidents occurring at home. An intervention programme for teaching people to recognise the importance of these dangers is also described.

摘要:
The article describes the planning, aims, content, and outcome of 10 workshop sessions run by parents of young adults with severe mental handicaps for a group of professional staff from health and social services departments. It is considered that the sessions went some way towards breaking down the barriers between parents and professionals but that there is still a long way to go.

摘要:
There has long been concern in terms of the validity of assessing vision in children with profound and multiple handicaps who are developmentally young. The problem is that, in assessing any specific capacity, most assessment tests rely on the integrity of other aspects of development. Also, conventional tests may not produce educationally relevant data or contain material which is intrinsically interesting to children with profound learning difficulties. This paper reviews the issues relating to the assessment of vision in such children, and demonstrates a standard technique for grading near vision using food items of varying size.

摘要:
There is limited provision of speech therapy resources to social education centres throughout the UK. Thus the need to provide the best possible service is particularly pressing. This article describes a short initial measure for determining SEC students' needs which will allow grouping for more thorough, ongoing assessment. Five different treatment groups are proposed. The assessment measure comprises a simple questionnaire, for use with student and key worker together, which can be reliably used to group students. It is suggested that it can be used in the first instance without the speech therapist having prior knowledge of the student. The implications of the measure are discussed.

摘要:
This is the last article in the four‐part series on relocation. Part 1 reviewed the literature and proposed guidelines for good practice. Part 2 described the implementation procedures used at Prudhoe Hospital to minimise the adverse effects of relocation. Part 3 reported on a study that looked at changes in the health and behaviour of 89 residents who moved between wards at that hospital. Part 4 tackles the issue of evaluation, using a qualitative, person‐centred approach. It is hoped that lessons may be learned by managers and professionals from the insight this article provides into what actually happens to individuals, and their relationships, when they are reloca
