SUMMARYAdults living in a mental handicap hospital, for whom fear of dogs was a problem, were included in a group treatment programme. Treatment involved gradual desensitisation over a period of 21 weekly sessions, making use of video and modelling procedures, and exposure to four different dogs. At the end of treatment, the majority showed an increased ability to cope with dogs. This improvement was maintained after nine months in those who had the opportunity to practise.

SUMMARYThe work of the occupational therapists and the music therapist at the Child Development Centre, Addenbrookes' Hospital, Cambridge, is briefly described, as well as the Child Development Centre itself. A music group for parents and their young children, run jointly by the music therapist and one of the occupational therapists, is looked at in detail. The structure of the group and the various ways in which the children and the parents are helped through the music are explained.

The Psychology Department of Southmead Health Authority has completed a register of its mental handicap unit population for two years. TheWessex Mental Handicap Assessment(used in 1983) and theDevelopment Team for the Mentally Handicapped (DTMH) Assessment(used in 1984) have provided a wide range of information useful to and requested by people working within the respective hospitals and hostels. The register has identified need and played a role in future planning. The use of a micro computer has made its information easily accessible.While it is appreciated that a large scale survey can only produce results of uncertain accuracy, it is considered that theBehavioural problemquestions in theDTMH Assessmentare not comprehensive enough. SUMMARYThe parents of 36 people with mental handicaps were interviewed concerning their views on more integrated services for their relatives. Most were in favour of such developments, but considerable opposition was expressed in a number of areas, especially in relation to day care and education. Parents of those with more severe handicaps tended to be least in favour of integration. Some implications for consumer involvement in the AWS are discussed.

SUMMARYPeople involved in facilitating communication and language in children with mental handicaps often use questions to elicit language from them. Using questions is not always very effective. Their extensive use might even hinder acquisition of spontaneous, creative, and functional language. The previous article surveyed various types of questions and indicated those which might be useful in intervention. This article argues that short responses to questions are often appropriate and should be accepted, examines facilitators' reactions to children's responses, and notes that children need to learn to ask as well as to answer questions.

SUMMARYIt has been suggested that repertory grid technique may be a useful method for assessing self‐concept in people with mental handicaps. SUMMARYThis paper compares the capital costs of providing ordinary housing for adults with severe and profound mental handicaps with those of providing larger 24–26 place community‐based units. SUMMARYA one‐week in‐service staff training course was given on two successive weeks at a residential and day centre for adults with mental handicaps in Ireland; and a year later at a similar centre in England.
