摘要:
Over recent years there has been a greater acknowledgement of the right of people with mental handicaps to express their sexuality. Considerable effort has been made to help others, mainly professionals working with them, to come to terms with this. It is argued that, because of different cares and concerns, their parents need a different type of help from that generally offered.A workshop is described which enabled parents to examine some of the issues that face their children as they reach adolescence and adulthood, so that they could take a positive attitude towards the development of the sexuality of their sons and daughters. Evaluation of the sessions demonstrated that attendance had been found useful by the parents. It seems likely that similar workshops would be well received.

摘要:
This paper describes the introduction of a goal planning system, over a period of 12 months, into four houses which were opened in response to the planned closure of a hospital for people with mental handicaps. The measures taken of goals set, goals achieved, and the stability of a key worker system, together with a description of the process of goal planning which includes staff training and support, enable the authors to describe the introduction of the scheme and to discuss pertinent issues.

摘要:
This article describes a survey carried out in England which identified factors associated with neighbourhood objections to community housing for people with mental handicaps. The five most common concerns of neighbours were: devaluation of neighbourhood property; the behaviour of residents; noise from the houses; risk to neighbours' children; and increased traffic.Over one‐fifth of the houses in the sample experienced organised opposition, whilst a much greater percentage experienced some hostility. Significantly more opposed houses than unopposed houses had a history of previous problems with neighbours. The other difference between houses which had experienced organised opposition and those which had not was the degree of consultation with local people prior to opening. Houses which had experienced organised opposition had been involved in more consultation with neighbours through letters, informal visits, and formal meetings. It was encouraging to find that most of the hostility dissipated following the opening of the houses. The level of integration and acceptance by local communities, however, never became very positiv

摘要:
This article, the second in a four‐part series, presents how one health authority has begun to tackle the issue of monitoring the quality of residential services to people with mental handicaps. It describes the factors that led to interest and research in monitoring in Bath District Health Authority, and outlines the steps through which a small working party went in its struggle to design one method of monitorin

摘要:
Refusal to walk, whilst not a particularly frequent problem presented by people with mental handicaps, can when it occurs severely curtail the level of a person's interaction with the environment. The present study describes a behavioural reinforcement procedure that was used to overcome refusal to walk by a young woman with a severe mental handicap and a severe visual impairment. The procedure was effective in that she will now walk willingly in the company of staff. The study highlights the need, when introducing behavioural programmes, to plan for generalisation and long‐term maintenance of effect

摘要:
This is a report of a questionnaire‐based survey undertaken by the National Institute for the Mentally Handicapped, Secunderabad, India. The objective was to compile information about the existing educational facilities for children with mental handicaps in the country. The study revealed that the majority of the educational facilities were managed by voluntary organisations and were found in urban areas. It was observed that there were more facilities in the southern states, and fewer in most of the northern and the northeastern region

摘要:
As part of a larger, questionnaire‐based study parents of children with mental handicaps and doctors with some involvement in this field were presented with a variety of words sometimes used to refer to people with mental handicaps. They were asked to indicate how often they felt each term should be used. Both groups strongly favoured the use of “mentally handicapped” and “learning difficulties”. Doctors were significantly more inclined than parents to accept “dull”, “backward”, and “devel

摘要:
A survey of all informal carers of adults with mental handicaps in the Monklands District of Scotland was carried out to establish the usage and demand for respite care services from parents and carers. The survey provided a profile of 82 “main carers” who replied to a postal questionnaire. Most of them had used no formal or informal respite care services during the previous year. Most stated that their needs for respite were un

摘要:
This article describes research undertaken to assess the need for a community leisure service in Tower Hamlets, part of London's East End.The results replicate the findings of other researchers; that many people with mental handicaps, though “living” in the community, remain isolated from the “community” in its widest sense. People in this study spent the majority of their free time engaged in housebound, solitary, passive, and family oriented activities. Pursuits which did involve “going out” tended to be for groups, such as attending clubs or sports activities. It was found that 84 per cent of respondents, that is, potential consumers, felt they would like to take part in leisure activities that they were not pursuing at the time of the study. The development of Tower Hamlets “Leisure‐Links” scheme is described, highlighting features of the scheme which distinguish it from other similar initiatives. Applications for fun
