When testing hypotheses, two important problems that applied statisticians must consider are whether a large enough sample was used, and what to do when the frequently adopted homogeneity of variance assumption is violated. The first goal in this paper is to briefly review exact solutions to these problems. In the one‐way ANOVA, for example, these procedures tell an experimenter whether enough observations were sampled so that the power will be at least as large as some pre‐specified level. If too few observations were sampled, the procedure indicates how many more observations are required. In this paper we discuss a method for assessing agreement among raters who are scoring the number of times, a specified event occurs. In such cases, it seems reasonable to define agreement in terms of raters' behaviours in correctly identifying responses which have in fact occurred, and in their falsely counting responses which have not. We exploit the discrete nature of the response variable, and examine a class of models for mean response assuming an underlying Poisson distribution. Test statistics are given for deciding on the applicability of the models, and whether there is agreement with respect to correctly detecting responses, as well as with falsely scoring responses.

Methods for obtaining tests of fit of structural models for covariance matrices and estimator standard errors which are asymptotically distribution free are derived. Modifications to standard normal theory tests and standard errors which make them applicable to the wider class of elliptical distributions are provided. A random sampling experiment to investigate some of the proposed methods is described.

This paper is concerned with the consistency of estimators in the analysis of moment structures. An example is given where in spite of identifiability of the parameters the associated estimator is inconsistent. Consistency is shown to hold under the additional condition of compactness of the parameter space.

The cumulative odds‐ratio model of uniformity of association in a two‐way ordered contingency table is studied, and compared with Goodman's local odds‐ratio model. It is shown that the cumulative model can be adapted to the deletion of cells, particularly deletion of diagonal cells in square tables, and an example of the improvement of fit obtained is given, and compared with the fit of the local model. The sensitivity of both models to collapse of categories and to changes in marginal totals is discussed, suggesting criteria for choosing between them. The dynamic representation of pairs of intensity judgement responses to two‐component odour mixtures, composed of various concentrations of bergamote and amyl acetate, is explored using multivariate time series analysis and the associated root locus diagrams derived from factoring a polynomial determinant of the matrix polynomial z‐transformation of the system transfer function.The topology of the root loci is examined for both pseudocoupled and really coupled conditions, to see how the component odourants interact in determining the psychophysics of odour mixture perception. Negative correlations have been obtained over subjects between slopes and intercepts in memoryscanning tasks. It is argued that such correlations are to be expected on purely statistical grounds. Predictions for such correlations are derived and compared with data from a large scale experiment of this type. A satisfactory match is obtained.

As an index of the propensity of the plurality voting procedure to produce an outcome which conflicts with the wishes of the majority, the likelihood of the weak Borda effect is flawed and misleading. It is recommended that researchers discontinue using the quantity for this purpose, since it is possible to obtain directly the likelihood of plurality/majority disagreement.
