摘要:
This is an exposition of the demographic forces in action in South Africa and their outcome in the form of the size, age and sex and ethnic composition, spatial distribution, growth and growth prospects of the population. Having found that inaccurate and incomplete information had been proffered in census enumerations and in registrations of births and deaths while vital statistics were completely lacking in some cases, the relevant statistics had to be adjusted for these deficiencies and demographic magnitudes to be estimated or created anew.

摘要:
Natural resources include everything physically available to mankind. Man will never exhaust these, the limiting factor being determined by what can be exploited economically at any particular time. For this part of a natural resource the term ‘reserves’ is used.

摘要:
South Africa's most pressing environmental problems are being experienced in those areas of the country experiencing most rapid population growth: our large towns and our African homelands. In urban areas we have high levels of air and water pollution, problems of litter and waste removal and noise abatement, and little planning to reduce the stress of urban living. In the homelands population pressure is high and focused directly on the natural environment because of a general lack of alternative resource bases. South Africa's ecosystems will support a growing population for a considerable time but we must recognize that some areas of our country are already under stress and our concern should be to alleviate existing problems while ensuring that new ones do not come about because of excessive growth in our population.

摘要:
The tremendous increase in the world's population is described in relation to depletions in the populations of wild plants and animals. Examples are given from the tropics, from islands and from temperate continental areas. Evidence from the better-studied regions shows that many species are declining in numbers. The most frequent cause of this is the destruction of essential features of their wild habitats. The case of the Cape Floristic Kingdom in South Africa, probably the richest area for flowering plants in the world, is examined. The area once occupied by its vegetation has been reduced by man by 61%, to remnants that are together smaller than the Kruger National Park. About 20% of the plant species in the Kingdom are suspected of being not far from extinction. It is shown that there is a good case for increasing the number and size of nature reserves in South Africa, to help preserve the country's natural heritage against the pressures of a human population that is growing by 60 000 persons a month. Basic priorities are a reduction in this population growth, education on the importance of natural diversity, and a better economic status for conservation.

摘要:
With the exception of a few commodities the Republic supplies its own requirements of the most important agricultural products, but its natural resources have serious limitations as far as the potential for food production is concerned. In this paper an attempt is made, firstly, to analyse the impact made by science (research) on capital inputs such as land, seed, fertilizers, pesticides and equipment and, secondly, to focus attention on the important role to be played by training and extension on the human inputs. The national and international research effort gives every reason for an optimistic view on the food production situation. However, agriculture can succeed in its task only if the available scientific knowledge is applied in farming practice. The best way of ensuring this is by means of the education and training of prospective farmers. Especially in the homelands, this aspect deserves the serious attention of the authorities.

摘要:
The relationship between the world supply of food materials and the demands of its ever-increasing population is described. The reasons for the existence of a ‘protein gap’ in spite of apparent world over-production of protein are explained and the efficacy of the method employed for closing this gap (the ‘Green Revolution’) is discussed.
