摘要:
The effect of crude oil onBulliahas been observed in the field, following an oil spill, and in the laboratory, using a light Arabian oil. Well-defined stress symptoms appear at sub-lethal concentrations; at higher doses these give way to paralysis before death ensues. Very low concentrations are fatal if there is contact between the animals and the oil, even if the oil has been weathered. If there is no direct contact much higher concentrations of fresh oil can be tolerated and weathering greatly reduces toxic effects. Mass mortality is unlikely to occur through eating oil-contaminated food.

摘要:
Calcium isolated from various fractions of corals and algae is converted into nitrate and dissolved in a water-ethyleneglycolmonoethylether-dioxane cocktail in the ratio of 1:2:20 using PPO and 1-dimethyl-POPOP as scintillators.45Ca in sea water is counted directly after dilution of 1:10 with water. The carrier capacity of the system is 3 mmole Ca (NO3)2/23ml (120 mg Ca). The counting efficiencies at minimum and maximum carrier concentration are 88,7% and 78,5% respectively. The scintillator solvent system is chemically stable and counts are highly reproducible.

摘要:
A method using cleared otoliths for age determination is described. Otolith size and fish length form a linear relationship. The Von Bertalanffy growth equation has been plotted and has an Loo value of 44 cm. Females increase in length and weight faster, and also reach a greater age than males. Females are recruited to the fishery between three and four years of age and the males at a year older.

摘要:
Morrumbene is a tropical estuary which opens into Inhambane Bay at 23°S on the coast of Moçambique. It is 193 km2in area and 20 km long with well-developed mangrove swamps draining into a broad lagoon. Temperature, salinity and substrate conditions are described and it is shown that water temperatures in the upper reaches vary from 18,8°C in winter to 28,2°C in summer. The vegetation is described briefly. The fauna was sampled by dredging, netting and intertidal transects along the estuary. It is very diverse. An annotated list shows the distribution of 404 macroinvertebrates and 114 species of fish. The estuary is not highly productive.
