摘要:
A comparison is made between plankton net catches from the modified Discovery pattern N70 and the Indian Ocean standard net. There was a significant difference in the estimation of standing crop by the two nets. A conversion factor is given. A modification of the Indian Ocean standard net incorporating a depth-flowmeter is described.

摘要:
The division into three subspecies of the salp,Thalia democratica, on the basis of numerical taxo-nomical studies is described here for the first time. The studies were carried out on both solitary and aggregate zooids. The coefficient used to process the data was Jaccard's coefficient (1908).

摘要:
Dredge and grab samples of the benthic fauna off Natal and Moçambique were obtained for the University of Cape Town ecological survey during the International Indian Ocean Expedition. 52 Species of Pelecypoda are reported as a result of this and some previous sampling off the Natal coast. Three new species of Pelecypoda are described in Boshoff (1968). From a brief analysis of the distribution records of only the reported species around southern Africa, it appears that the Natal benthic Pelecypod fauna is fairly distinct from that of the South African south coast. The Natal fauna contains a higher proportion of endemic species and a lower proportion of tropical species than the Moçambique fauna. None of the Moçambique Pelecypoda and only 7% of the Natal Pelecypoda extend to the West Coast of South Africa.

摘要:
Three new species of benthic bivalve shell specimens,—i.e.Nucella fragilis, Leda lanceta, andPeriploma fracturaare described conchologically with indications of the place of origin of each shell. The last-mentioned is a new genus among the shells of Africa. Measurements, photos and diagrams accompany the description of each shell specimen, which at the same time is also named here.
