Conventional cavity designs are coming under increased scrutiny because of an increased emphasis on preservation of tooth substance. The tunnel restoration, when used with glass ionomer, may overcome some of the disadvantages of conventional cavity preparations. Direct posterior composites have had problems in the past and thus have not had wide acceptance. The newest generation materials overcome many of their previous shortcomings. Finishing with proper anatomy has been difficult and time‐consuming. An alternative to overfilling and then grinding in the anatomy is proposed. Using a prefilled tip allows small increments of composite to be placed without flowing and sagging. Each cusp is individually shaped and initially cured for 10 seconds. Every attempt is made not to overfill the preparation to avoid unnecessary grinding. The anatomy shapes up almost automatically, similar to P.K. Thomas waxing. With only minor adjustments and polishing with a polishing paste, time spent finishing is reduced. The application of a disinfecting step in cavity preparation and tooth restoration is gaining wider acceptance. This study examined the effect of two commercially available disinfecting agents on the shear bond strength to dentin using a fourth generation dentin bonding agent. The agent tested permitted an evaluation of both dry and wet bonding techniques. It was found that the commercial preparations did not adversely affect shear bond strength to dentin in either the dry or wet application.

This study was to determine the bond strength of composite to glass ionomer using the following adhesive resin cements: Imperva Dual, CB Metabond, All‐Bond, Geristore, and Panavia. All materials were mixed following the manufacturer's specifications. Bonded samples were thermocycled for 2000 xbetween 5°C and 55°C. Shear bond strengths were determined using an Instron Testing Machine. No statistical differences were noted between materials at the p<.05 level of significance.
