摘要:
AbstractThe results of a project concerned with studying infants' physical attractiveness are reviewed. Information on what makes an infant cute and what the effects of infant cuteness are, is provided. These findings and hypotheses derived from them are then discussed in relation to the bonding and attachment phenomena. It is suggested that adults' initial reactions to the appearance of any infant are similar to what occurs during bonding, whereas differential reactions to infants varying in appearance are similar to the variability observed in the construction of an attachment relationship. Adults' reactions to atypical appearance are also discussed.

摘要:
AbstractTwenty premature and 20 fullterm infants participated in study of stranger sociability and infant‐mother attachment. The preterms were born 4–10 weeks early and had a mean birth weight of 1990 grams. The two groups of infants did not differ on variables such as SES or time between hospital discharge and laboratory assessment. Stranger sociability was assessed in the Stevenson and Lamb (1979) procedure, and security of attachment in the Strange Situation (Ainsworth&Wittig, 1969). Mothers also completed questionnaires on child‐rearing attitudes, perinatal anxiety, and infant temperament. Results showed that birth status was unrelated to both attachment and sociability. Securely attached infants were more sociable, however, and were perceived as more “easy” than insecurely attached infants. Difficult infants were less sociable than infants perceive

摘要:
AbstractThirty‐three infants at risk for developmental delay were videotaped interacting with their mothers. Maternal position during interaction (facing, beside, or behind the infant) was strongly related to the frequency of maternal interactional behavior and to indices of infant communication and cognitive development. Intervention to teach mothers to use the facing position showed that improvement in position was related to increases in both maternal interactional behavior and infant development. Because the mother's position is easily assessed, understood, and changed by a mother, it is potentially useful to early intervention programs, particularly those serving at risk population

摘要:
AbstractLanguage arises out of the infant‐caregiver's nonverbal communication patterns. These patterns are transactional in nature and are in part stimulated by genetically based fixed‐action patterns of the infant. Child‐rearing practices of the caregiver greatly influence the rate and nature of infant's language development and later measures of achievement, particularly IQ scores. Marked differences in child‐rearing patterns are found among social class, ethnic and racial groups. Means of facilitating an infant's development are di

摘要:
AbstractCommunication is considered a function based on reciprocity and communicativeness with a human partner, the child's participation and capacity, and the adult's adaptiveness and interpreting enable differentiation of messages and meanings. Major precursors of pre‐speech communication acts of infants, as suggested by Bruner, are presented, taking into consideration caregiver's mode of interpreting the infant's communication intent, joint referential devices, and strategies for enlisting in joint activit
