摘要:
AbstractThis investigation examined the relation between features of the home environment (HOME Scale) and domains of development (Griffiths Scales) in 6‐month‐olds. The sample consisted of 155 families with diverse demographic characteristics who were part of a larger study. Data were analyzed using hierarchical multiple regression. More favorable eye‐hand development was associated with more availability of appropriate play materials. The interaction of appropriate play materials and maternal involvement was related to both social and hearing‐speech development. For the infants who had high exposure to appropriate play materials, social and hearing‐speech development was more optimal if their mothers were highly involved with them. The analyses were conducted separately for low (n= 87) and middlelhigh (n= 55) socioeconomic status groups from the sample. Partial replication of the interaction effect was present for the middle/high group, but not for the low group. Findings support the importance of examining interaction as well as additive effects of the impact of early environment for relatively large samples in which there is a diversity of ex

摘要:
AbstractThe purpose of this study was to examine factors related to the quality of the home environments mothers provide for their infants. Data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth on 602 mothers with infants between 12 and 23 months of age were used for this study. Consistent with Belsky's model of the determinants of parenting, the quality of the home environment was influenced by maternal characteristics, child characteristics, and contextual factors. A positive linear relation was found between scores on a family risk index and the probability that infants were experiencing a relatively unsupportive home environment.

摘要:
AbstractThe responsiveness of mothers to their infants has been found to make an important contribution to children's development. Mothers' cognitive ability, emotional state, and life stresses may influence their responsiveness, as may the medical condition of their infants. The patterns of influence may vary between groups of children with different biological risk conditions and should be examined carefully to determine intervention points for different groups.Forty mothers and their 3‐month‐old (corrected age) infants with intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) were observed in free play. Mothers' depressive symptoms, cognitive skills, and the degree of infants' IVH were assessed and expected to be influences on mothers' responsiveness. Results indicated that mothers' depressive symptoms and cognitive skills were associated with their responsiveness, but that depressive symptoms were the stronger predictor. Post hoc analyses suggested that socioeconomic status and depressive symptoms may have related effects on mothers' behav

摘要:
AbstractThe findings of Niwa/Tanaka's studies on mothers' adaptation process to Down Syndrome infants through prospective and long‐term intervention were reeaxmined through mothers' retrospective accounts of their past experiences. Fifteen mothers volunteered to participate in clinical interviews prepared for this purpose. The following results were obtained from the interviews: (1) The adaptation of mothers of Down Syndrome children involved a process enduring far beyond the initial shock, so that long‐term longitudinal support and intervention, both developmental and psychotherapeutic, were necessary; (2) The subjects experienced intense psychological shock twice before their children reached school age, as we had predicted through our clinical experiences. An adaptation process consisting of five stages was observed; (3) Although the maternal affects experienced by the Japanese mothers in their process of adaptation generally looked similar to those of American and British mothers, some affective reactions were discovered that seemed to reflect existing Japanese social conditions and cultural peculiarities by which these mothers were deeply influenced; (4) A tentative model for intervention to support mothers' adaptatipn process is proposed based on the findings of the present st

摘要:
AbstractAn association between maternal psychopathology and failure to thrive (FTT) has been reported previously, but no prior investigators have used both operationalized diagnostic criteria for psychopathology and a control group in their studies. Twenty‐eight mothers of children with FTT and 22 mothers of normally developing control children were assessed for psychopathology by the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM‐III‐R–Nonpatient Version (SCID‐NP) and the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM‐III‐R–Personality Disorders (SCID‐II). Affective disorders, personality disorders, and the COoccurrence in an indvidual of these two types of disorders were found at higher rates in mothers of children with FTT compared to controls. These results clarify prior reports of an association between failure to thrive and maternal psychopathology and may have implications for treatment

摘要:
AbstractThe purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that mothers with depressed mood would exhibit less optimal interaction than their nondepressed counterparts and that their infants would show similar deficits in interactional behavior. Twenty‐two mothers and their 2‐month‐old infants were videotaped in to‐minute free‐play segments in a laboratory playroom, and their interactions were coded using both time‐sampling and global clinical ratings of behavior. Mothers with depressed mood were judged significantly lower on overall positive interaction, Expressivity/Affective Involvement, and Responsivity/ Sensitivity than were nondepressed mothers. Infants of mothers with depressed mood were rated significantly lower than infants of nondepressed mothers on corresponding interaction domains. Mothers with depressed mood were also rated as more variable than nondepressed mothers along a continuum of withdrawal to controlling/intrusive behavior. Contrary to prediction, level of maternal stimulation and infant activity did not differ as a function of depression in maternal mood. We conclude that mild to moderate symptoms of maternal depression may have salient but selective effects on mother‐infan
