摘要:
AbstractWhile it can reasonable be said that parents have been the leaders in infant mental health research for much longer, the literature traces our beginnings only to the early decades of this century. Early work focused on the astonishing developmental changes in infants deprived of maternal contact during hospitalization, and early questions arose about the possibility of lifelong psychological disorder resulting from such early deprivation. Later research demonstrated that even though the infants are clearlyvulnerable, they are alsoactiveand very much a reciprocating part of the attachment process. Most recently we have learned to understand caregiver‐infant interaction as a display of both the joys and the conflicts in relationship, and methods of intervention are slowly evolvin

摘要:
AbstractThe role of the infant mental health therapist is differentiated from that of other infant interventionists as being a secondary prevention treatment approach employing the techniques of long‐term, insight‐oriented psychotherapy. Such an approach encourages the caregiver to recall his or her own childhood experiences and conflicts to gain an understanding of feelings directed at his or her own baby. The prevention models of Caplan are considered as is the development of the work of Fraiberg and her colleag

摘要:
AbstractThe idea of „infant psychotherapy”︁ is easily misunderstood, especially by those who associate psychiatry with images of crazy behavior. Nevertheless, there is a type of activity conducted by adults with infants, discussed with increasing frequency in recent literature, which is best understood in an analogy with adult psychotherapy. This activity may be called infant psychotherapy or infant‐centered activity. Briefly, it consists of encouraging the infant to take the lead, and asking the adult in charge to follow or „track”︁ the infant's behavior as unobtrusively as possible. This is more easily said than done, and the present work tries to show why this is so. A discussion of the maternal‐infant program at the Milwaukee County Mental Health Centre accompanies t

摘要:
AbstractThis study investigated the effect of three parent‐education methods for use with mothers in maternity wards. The three methods were videotapes and a handbook, videotapes only, and handbook only. The two groups who received the videotapes performed better on a posttest than two no‐treatment control groups. No differences were evident between the videotapes and handbook group and the videotapes‐only group. The handbook‐only condition was better than only one of the control groups. Usefulness of the program, problems encountered, and future research needs are di

摘要:
AbstractParents of infants who had been enrolled in a day‐care center were asked to evaluate their day‐care experience as well as their children's current development status. In general, parent evaluations provided strong support for day care as an effective means of supplementary infant care. When dissatisfaction with day care was expressed, it focused on matters pertaining to infant health, physical resources of the center, parent involvement in center activities, and caregiver‐infant ratios. Parents perceived their children to be advanced in competence skills relative to their peers. With few exceptions, parents viewed group day care as the most desirable type of supplementary infant care, but only if high‐quality staff and programs could be

摘要:
AbstractOnly recently has determining the child‐rearing concerns of parents been considered an important research objective. Existing efforts have, for the most part, either employed small sample sizes or surveyed parents already in the process of seeking help or advice. It was, therefore, felt that additional, more representative data were needed. In the present study, 583 mothers with children aged 59 months or younger were surveyed regarding their concerns about their children's development. On the „Specific Needs Assessment Report”︁ (SNAR) (copyright © 1975, by Karl F. Riem, J. Jeffrey Crisco, and Kathy Willms), mothers rated their concerns for 60 developmental‐behavioral items about their children's health, attending skills, problem behaviors, communication skills, motor skills, cognitive skills, self‐help skills, and social skills. Mothers were most frequently concerned to a moderate or major degree about at least one item of the problem behavior category. For this category, parent‐child management, crying‐whining, and temper tantrums were the individual items of greatest concern. Mothers of girls more frequently indicated health concerns than mothers of boys. These results support those of previous investigations, which suggested the need for parent education programs to help parents manag
