摘要:
AbstractA review of infant group daycare programs abroad and in the USA leads to the conclusion that the degree of industrial and technological development is a major determinant of infant daycare practices. In the USA a culture gap exists between the middle class providers and the predominantly poor and non‐caucasion recipients of the service. Difficulties in implementing programs, especially in transmitting child development information to parents stem from these basically different orientations. Some suggestions are made that may lead to more effective communication and collaboration between families using daycare personne

摘要:
AbstractSeventy‐two children (18 black males, 18 white males, 18 black females, 18 white females) and their families participated in a study to examine the the validity of the HOME Inventory in terms of its relation to early indices of social behavior. Early social behavior was assessed using the Infant Behavior Record from the Bayley Scales. A factor analysis produced five behavior dimensions: 1) positive orientation and involvement, 2) fear and reticence, 3) enthusiasm and alertness, 4) activity level, and 5) self‐absorption. In general, the findings show a similar but somewhat stronger relation between home environment scores and social behavior for females than males. For infant males, positive orientation was significantly related to organization of the environment and provision of appropriate play materials. Self‐absorption was moderately related to avoidance of restriction and punishment. For infant girls, both positive orientation and activity level were significantly related to four of the six HOME subs

摘要:
AbstractThe earliest phases of the mother‐infant relationship may markedly be influenced, for better or worse, by the emotional availability of the father. In our contemporary Western societies young expectant couples are often isolated psychologically. It is suggested thatifsuch circumstances exist and the motheralsohas psychological risk factors stemming from her past history and/or from her experience with the pregnancy and delivery, the husband's ability to fulfill some special mothering functions toward his wife would tip the balance between adequate coping or manifest disturbance in the mother—infant relations

摘要:
AbstractThis paper describes the rationale, procedures, and initial validation of an instrument which assesses distal environmental factors thought to negatively influence maternal caregiving ability. A sample of 36 lower class, single, black mothers (ranging in age from 14 to 19 years) of first born, full‐term infants were included in an educational intervention program carried out during infants' first 12 months of life. The development of the maternal risk score (MRS) instrument was centered around four areas: maturity of mother, degree of planning of the mother, family support system and level of poverty. Initial, Year 1, Year 2, and Year 3 MRS scores were compared with infant development at one and two years as measured by the Bayley Scales, and at three years with the McCarthy Scales, using Pearson product‐moment correlations. The initial MRS correlated negatively with the Bayley Mental Development Index (MDI)atYear 1 and alsoatYear 2 (N=−.38 and −.40 respectively, both significant atp<.05). The MRS for Year 1 showed significant negative correlations with the two Bayley MDIs: two and three year MRS scores were significantly related to three year McCarthy test scores. This screening instrument, which assesses qualitative aspects of the caretaking environment, appears to be a promising approach for identifying lower class mothers of infants who might be at risk for developmental disab

摘要:
AbstractThe psychomotor development of 1,406 low socioeconomic infants from Santiago, Chile, was examined. Four groups of infants were assessed: 12, 15, 18 and 21 months of age. Results indicated that as chronological age increased, the number of infants who fell into at‐risk or delay categories increase

摘要:
AbstractThe Functional Maternal Concern of mothers for their infants was assessed (with an Index derived from Caldwell's Home Observation for the Measurement of the Environment.) when 36 children, heterogeneous with respect to social status, were 6‐ and 18‐months‐old. Scores on this Index were related to the mother's IQ and education, as well as to certain temperamental characteristics of the children: cooperativeness and happiness. The Index proved stable over the time period of 6 to 18 months and yielded better predictability of Stanford Binet scores at 48 months than the Bayley Infant test scores. Moreover, there appears to be a minimal level of maternal concern needed to facilitate the child's development which seems to be especially important for the second year of

摘要:
AbstractMothers' responses to slides of infants were assessed. During individual presentations of the slides they showed increases in smiling to infant photographs in general, but showed large skin conductance responses only to pictures of their own infant. They did not look differentially at the photographs. During paired presentations, mothers looked longer at their own infant's photograph. Moreover, they looked longer at unfamiliar infants who they perceived to be high in cuteness. These findings are discussed with reference to the role of infant physical appearance in infant‐adult social relation
