摘要:
AbstractResearch related to the impact of teenage parenting upon a child's developmental status is reviewed. Though the empirical base is limited, several researchers agree that children born to teenage mothers show poor social and intellectual competence relative to children born to older mothers. However, if such developmental differences do exist, research to date has contributed little to an understanding of the causal mechanisms involved. The commonly reported medical factors associated with teenage pregnancy probably are not sufficient to account for the reported developmental differences. On the other hand, socioeconomic factors and the caretaking environments provided by teenage mothers could be related to developmental problems for the children involved, though much of the research in these areas is of questionable quality. Finally, if we are to develop an understanding of teenage childrearing sufficient to guide intervention programs, there is a need for the use of more sophisticated research models than have been used to date.

摘要:
AbstractSince preterm infants and infants born to teenage mothers are noted to be at risk for developmental delays, a group of infants who were both preterm and born to teenage mothers was provided a sensorimotor exercise intervention program for the first year of infancy. The development of these infants was compared to the development of preterm infants without intervention and term infants of teenage mothers as well as term and preterm infants of adult mothers to determine the degree to which developmental delays were prevented. The intervention infants showed more optimal growth, cognitive development, temperament and play behaviors during interactions with their mothers across the first year of development.

摘要:
AbstractFathering activities of 16 fathers of firstborns were surveyed via questionnaire to assess their involvement in physical caretaking, affective interaction and support of mother through participation in household tasks. Results indicated that student fathers who had previous infant care experience, whose infants were unplanned and whose wives were either employed or attending school spent the most time interacting with their infants. Other variables explored which had little effect on father's interaction time included: formal education, attendance at prenatal clases, infant's sex and method of feeding, family isolation. Fathers spent more time in affective interaction than in physical caretaking. Time spent by fathers in affective interaction was nearly equal to that of mothers, while time spent in physical caretaking was much greater for mothers.

摘要:
AbstractThe Parent/Toddler Education and Guidance Group is designed for parents and their 18–36 month old children who are experiencing mild to moderate difficulties with the developmental issues of toddlerhood. The goal of the group is to help parents support their child's growing autonomy, and create a new level of communication between parent and child. The program is described in a general way and is then illustrated in examples of two case

摘要:
AbstractThe experiences of nine young handicapped children and their families with a variety of human service institutions are discussed. A retrospective account is presented from the parents' perspective of those aspects of their and their children's experience that have had a significant impact on their quality of life. Central among these experiences has been the interpersonal interaction with professionals. The parents' reported experiences regarding identification, the search for assistance, assessment, and their children's receipt of services suggest that there are problems in the areas of locating and acquiring an appropriate combination of services to meet family needs and in the quality of interpersonal relationships between parents and professionals. Recommendations are made to alleviate these and other problems.
