摘要:
AbstractThe radical critique, born out of the social unrest of the 1960s and early 1970s, has provided a strong basis for criticism of most social institutions. This paper examines the basic tenets of the radical critique and the extent to which competing paradigms within nursing have silenced the radical critique for nursing.

摘要:
AbstractThe challenge in nursing education is to create a learning environment that enables students to learn new knowledge, access previously acquired information from a variety of disciplines, and apply this newly constructed knowledge to the complex and constantly changing world of practice. Faculty at the University of South Australia, School of Nursing, City Campus describe the use of reality based scenarios to acquire domain-specific knowledge and develop well connected associative knowledge networks, both of which facilitate theory based practice and the student’s transition to the role of registered nurse.

摘要:
AbstractConsidered by many to be the panacea for all nursing’s problems, the clinical nurse specialist (CNS) has only recently gained widespread recognition as a legitimate role in Australia. The CNS is the equivalent in other states and territories of the clinical nurse consultant, the charge nurse or the nurse unit manager. Implementation of the role has been complicated by inadequately delineated role functions, unrealistic expectations and limited recognition of clinical expertise. Using both quantitative and qualitative exploratory techniques it was found that three critical themes impinged in a negative way on the effectiveness of the CNS. These were role ambiguity, role overload and the‘paradox of power’. Maintaining clinical expertise in the practice setting is essential for high quality cost effective and autonomous nursing care and this can be provided through the effective implementation of the CNS role.

摘要:
AbstractThis paper uses leadership theory and personal observations to reflect on leadership behaviours observed during a third year clinical placement on an Oncology Unit. It examines the consequences of the different leadership styles of two registered nurses, firstly a clinical nurse consultant (CNC) and secondly a level one registered nurse, who acted as the author’s preceptor. Conclusions are drawn about the value of preceptoring baccalaureate undergraduates.

摘要:
AbstractContent analysis of 83 newspaper articles from February 1991 to January 1993 was the chosen method to determine the role of newspapers in the portrayal of the mentally ill.Two emergent themes arose: the closure of a mental health hospital was viewed negatively; and the stereotypical perception of the mentally ill as violent and unpredictable was reinforced. Over the two year period of the study the shift in focus from the ideology of de-institutionalisation, funding issues, crisis and chaos in the mental health hospital eventuated in an emphasis on the negativity associated with mental illness.
