abstractA simulation on the transient network analyzer (TNA) is presented which permits the investigation of phenomena occurring when switching HV–AC motors. In the special case of switching off motors at the start the range of values used for the simulation on the TNA can be restricted. Therefore a range of the rated capacity is given for the motors and a range of length for the connecting cables as well. The circuit breaker is simulated by an electronic circuit controlled by a microprocessor unit. The dielectric strength of the circuit breaker is taken into account and its current chopping leve 1, too. Also the range of the chopping level can be limited. Simple arrangements allow the analytical calculation of the trans ients. The paper shows the area of the natural frequencies of the transient recovery voltages and what errors occur by simplified calculation of the overvoltages. If the circuit breaker does not restrike, the over voltage factors can be calculated in the whole data range. Some measurements on the TNA are presented. The overvoltage factors phase to earth and between phases can be evaluated directly from the oscillograms.

The nonlinear system considered here is the heating up ofaconductor during a heavy short circuit. So a time varying parameter, the resistance and an almost time independent one, the inductance, must been estimated.

AbstractModelling and parameter estimation are distinguished as aspects of software reliability evaluation. Three software reliability models have been selected for application to software failure data obtained in practice. The model parameters are estimated by means of the maximum likelihood method. New criteria on the data are derived that have to be satisfied in order that bounded estimates for individual model parameters exist.Application to both simulated and real failure data shows that on the Whole, none of the models performs significantly worse or better than the others. The estimation results are dependent on the amount of failure data available and on the way the data have been obtained.
