Summary“There are some types of reasoning which are acceptable in a given situation but not justifiable according to the rules of formal logic. This sort of reasoning seems to depend on a judgment about what the speaker knows along with an Assumption of Maximum Information, that if the speaker is serious he is making the logically strongest statement he knows to be true. Because such reasoning can be informally correct, formal logic should be understood as establishing rules not for all acts of inference but only for those which do not depend on contingent judgments about the context of an assertion.”RésuméIl y a des types de raisonnement qui sont acceptables dans une situation donnée, mais qui ne sont pas justifiables selon les règles de la logique formelle.

SummaryThis paper develops a semantical account of sentences containing performative principal verbs in which these verbs are analyzed asindexicalexpressions: the proposition picked out by a sentence containing a performative verb depends on aspects of the context of use of the sentence; and these same aspects of context of use also determine the truth value of the proposition picked out. A two‐dimensional modal operator (t) is utilized in analyzing non‐ performative sentences that contain principal verb which, in other contexts, have performative uses. Thus, the analysis developed accounts for the performative — non‐performative distinction within a formal semantic‐pragmatic framework; the more common approach of relegating the distinction to the somewhat vague realm of ‘language use’ is avoided.RésuméCet article développe un traitement sémantique des phrases contenant un verbe principal performatif.

SummaryA special theory of probability is propounded as a non‐deductive supplement to analytic judgments in epistemological systems. This theory combines ‘inductive’ probability (cognitive) and ‘effective’ probability (chance) in a total probability which is the ‘degree of certainty’ of our beliefs. For cases of false belief, the concept of ‘degree of credibility’, orassumeddegree of certainty, is introduced. This quantity is mathematically combined with the ‘real’ degree of certainty to determine the flower) degree of certainty implicit in a mistaken credence.RésuméUne théorie spéciale de la probabilité comme supplément non déductif des jugements analytiques en systèmes épistémologiques est proposée.

SummaryThe significance of the concept of coincidence for a protophysical chronometry is investigated and an alteration to P. Janich's definition of a clock proposed. Some relations, in particular a possible incompatibility, between proto‐physical and relativistic time measurement are discussed and some conclusions drawn as to the meaning of “proto‐physical foundation”.RésuméUne analyse de la signification de la notion de coïncidence en chronométrie protophysique conduit à proposer une modification de la définition d'une horloge donnée par P. Janich.

SummaryThe history of quantum physics has been deeply conditioned by the change in scientific practice as a social activity during the past fifty years. As a result the theory has not been allowed full maturing; both its formal and empirical advances have not resulted in a comparable conceptual progress. Therecastingof quantum theory thus appears as an epistemological necessity. One of the main aspects of this process is to clear quantum theory from its persisting classical connections in order to endow it with an autonomous and intrinsic status. Problems related to the foundations, description, interpretation and approximations of quantum theory are considered in turn, and various recent works are reviewed which contribute to the proposed endeavour.RésuméL'histoire de la théorie quantique a été fortement conditionnée par les changements intervenus au cours des cinquante dernières années dans la pratique scientifique en tant qu'activité sociale.

SummaryThis paper sets the developmental view of Piaget and the structural perspective of Lonergan in juxtaposition for the purpose of allowing their complementary approaches on objectivity to jointly illuminate their common epistemological theme of the constitutive role of the creative and constructive knowing subject at the heart of the cognitive process, as well as to highlight what I argue is their commonly shared and fundamental epistemological thesis ofself‐transcending subjectivity: the radical identity ofgenuineobjectivity andauthenticsubjectivity — that subjectivity is objective insofar as it transcends itself.RésuméCet article met la vue génétique de Piaget en parallèle avec la perspective structurale de Lonergan.

SummaryThis paper attempts to develop an interpretation of Kant's transcendental idealism which is based upon his critique of transcendental realism (understood as the view which systematically confuses appearances with things as they are in themselves). It is argued that given Kant's transcendental distinction, all non‐ or pre‐critical philosophies, even Berkeleian phenomenalism are transcendentally realistic. This paradoxical result is used as the basis for an analysis of Kant's resolution of the mathematical antinomies, wherein this resolution is seen both as an “indirect proof” of transcendental idealism and as a refutation of transcendental realism. Finally, it is claimed that Kant's idealism, at least insofar as it is established by means of a refutation of transcendental realism, is methodological rather than metaphysical, viz. it involves a claim about how the sensible world is to beconsideredin transcendental reflection, not a claim about the “real nature” of this world.RésuméCet article essaye de développer une interprétation de l'idéalisme transcendental de Kant, interprétation basée sur sa critique du réalisme transcendental (entendu comme le point de vue qui confond systématiquement les apparences avec les choses telles qu'elles sont en elles‐mêmes).

In his response to my article, “Historicism and Science: Thoughts on Quine” (Dialectica, Vol. 29, Nos. 2‐3), Paul Bernays distinguishes between two aspects of the article: my criticism of Quine's theory of knowledge and my contention that the epistemological foundations of modern science lead to historicism. Bernays substantially accepts my criticism of Quine, particularly insofar as I reject Quine's behaviorism and “physicalism”. He opposes, however, my claim that historicism is implicit in the presuppositions of modern science. I argued that the historicism inherent in modern science is due to the essentially changeable character of modern science. Quine's theory of knowledge tacitly takes account of this changeable character a) through his view of sense experience as being constituted by posits, b) through his recognition that individual scientific statements are dependent upon a broad linguistic‐conceptual framework that is itself subject to change, and c) through his pragmatic conception of reason and the concomitant emphasis upon the criterion of
